Pros

  • Good place for up-and-coming artists
  • Plenty of musical events
  • Cheap drink option
  • Very posh atmosphere

Cons

  • Not a lot of drink options

A posh, cabaret-esque Midtown club in Houston, The Continental Club is less of a club and is more of a relaxing place where you can enjoy great music from up-and-coming artists.

What we appreciated the most about The Continental Club is that they open up their space to every musical artist. The Continental Club rose to infamy by discovering lots of emerging artists. Jazz and rock artists alike have found their claim to fame by playing here!

The regular folks really help give it that posh atmosphere, too. Most of the visitors there are music enthusiasts alike who all enjoy the same $3 Lone Star Tall Boys that they serve.

And that’s where the jig comes up – they don’t have lots of drink options for a club. As we said, it’s more of a cabaret club as compared to other clubs. So you’re not really going there for drinks, but rather for the music.

But with plenty of music events in store for you every time you visit – who cares if they don’t have lots or drinks, or that the food stalls are only present when there are huge artists playing. The Continental Club is just a place for you to chill and enjoy the music!

Pros

  • Great events
  • Seasonal wine list changes weekly
  • Plenty of alcoholic beverages on tap
  • Snacks go well with the drinks

Cons

  • Limited snack options

Great events and an even more amazing drink options? Yes, please – and we’ll take our wine at an extra chilly “13 Celsius,” please!

13 Celsius’ diverse drink list blows our minds. There’s a lot to choose from, and you can surely enjoy it with their regular events, too. And a tip from us, their By The Glass menu has a seasonal wine list that change weekly, so not every visit will be the same!

Our top pick from their drinks would have to go to the sparkling Château Moncontour and the seasonal Stark Condé red wine. The Château Moncontour is just the right amount of sweet, and we really liked the Stark Condé’s legs and overall texture.

But, if you want a different wine experience, then you have to try out their Super Natty Red Wine – or a more “natural” wine. Give their L’Equinox a spin, and thank us later.

That being said, they also have plenty of snacks that go well with their wine. Their Charcuterie Board has lots of great hams and cheeses, but their spreadable Triple Cream Brie comes with a baguettem fruits, marcona almonds, mostardas which sealed the deal for us.

If you ask us, their snacks is our only problem. We did find their snack list to be a bit underwhelming, since there’s not much to choose from. Yes, all of them go well with their wines, but we did find the list to be underwhelming yet delicious.

Pros

  • Live concerts are great
  • Great food options
  • Amazing drinks
  • Open mic nights

Cons

  • Underground parking is far

With amazing food, drinks, and an open mic night to boot, our overall experience with Leon’s Lounge has been an over all stellar experience.

We really liked the sheer amount of events they have in store. As of the time of writing, they have open mic nights hosted by Randy Soffar, and it’s a fun way to blow off some steam and have some fun seeing drunk people speak some… entertaining stuff, too.

Their drinks aren’t half bad, too! Though there’s not a lot to choose from, their Whiskey Smash isn’t half bad. The syrup that they use isn’t that sweet, and the mint is the (unironic) cherry on top.

We also liked their food options, too! The Old School Burger has this nice and tangy 1000 island dressing which goes well with the burger patty and the bacon. But their Mozzarella Sticks is a good finger food option if you want a crispy, cheesy snack.

The only thing that we didn’t appreciate as much with Leon’s Lounge is their parking situation. The video that they have on their website is time-lapsed, but their underground parking is a long walk away from them, especially if you park farther.

But their music events more than make up for the distance, especially when you consider that they have live music on Saturday evenings, too! As of the time of writing, they will have a ’90s Party with the Monicas, which is sure to be a blast!

Pros

  • Beautiful atmosphere
  • Happy hour offers good discounts
  • Sunday is an all-day Happy Hour
  • Good flavor profile on the brunch menu

Cons

  • Expensive appetizers

A Midtown club in Houston that’s unlike any other, we really liked The Dogwood’s duality of being a great party spot on weekdays and an even better brunch spot on the weekends!

We have to give it out to The Dogwood’s delicious cocktails. The Southern Lemonade is our top pick, it comes out zesty and refreshing, and the Agave Nectar makes it just the right amount of sweet for us. But if you want yours sweeter, then it doesn’t hurt to ask!

But if you find the Southern Lemonade’s price tag of $13.25 to be too rich, then visiting them during their Happy Hour can give you a dollar off of that, along with $7 off on appetizers on Thursdays!

Now, the $7 off on Thursday Happy Hours should tell you about the price point on their appetizers. Paying $14 for a (really delicious) plate of Nachos is not it, and paying that much for an appetizer, no matter how great their guac is, can be seen as a ripoff.

However, visit them on Sunday noons and you’ll be in for a delicious treat! They run an all-day Happy Hour and a Sunday brunch with an all-exclusive menu. Get their Breakfast Bagel from their brunch menu, and choose the bacon. It’s worth it,

Pros

  • Open space
  • Nice place for music enthusiasts
  • Food stalls offer a great food variety
  • Hammock Grove is perfect for relaxing

Cons

  • Uncomfortable seats

With concerts and food trucks aplenty, Axelrad continues to provide Houstonians with great music along with a beautiful space to boot!

Unlike other Midtown clubs in Houston, Axelrad’s open space is a great area for you to relax and really enjoy their live music. But, if that’s not relaxing enough for you, then we bet their hammock grove will – yes, they have hammocks for you to relax in, too!

Their drinks are really good, too! The Landing Strip is their refreshing twist on a Spicy Margarita, but if you want a more traditional refreshment then their Irish Coffee is the way to go – the homemade marshmallow whipped cream isn’t as thick as we expected!

We liked the food vendors they have around, which more than makes up for their lack of in-house food options. They come on a rotating basis, so visit them on Thursdays when H-Town Hibachi is around and give their Steak and Chicken combo a try!

The only thing that we didn’t like about Axelrad is their uncomfortable seats. They don’t have seats per se – it feels more like a church pew. But then again, you can chill out in their hammocks by the big neon tree, so you can still avoid their seating.

And Axelrad has lots of live events lined up for you to enjoy your relaxing time, too! But if music is not quite your thing, then visit them on Sundays for a live comedy show that will leave you in absolute stitches.

Pros

  • Great space for party-goers
  • Plenty of high-end drinks
  • Lively Saturday-night events
  • Free entry on all events

Cons

  • Expensive drinks

Don’t let their low reviews fool you – if you want a legitimate nightlife experience, then Gavanna is the place that you should go to. It’s a great bar that can deliver that authentic Midtown Houston club vibe that we’ve been looking for.

At first glance, Gavanna resembles a Japanese host club thanks to its bright lights and lounge bar. But then, the high-tempo electronic music starts up, and you just know that you’re in for a great time!

Though it’s lively every single day, we recommend visiting them on Saturdays since it’s their Gavanna Saturday where you can enter for free ‘til 11 PM! The event itself is very lively, and you’ll for sure have lots of fun if you’re a clubbing enthusiast.

But if you do want to have a great time at Gavanna, then you’ll have to pregame at home since their drinks are very expensive. Their entire menu averages out at $400, with their cheapest alcoholic beverage, their house champagne, being $70.

That being said, the high price of the drinks makes sense since most of them are on the higher end of the spectrum. The Bombay Sapphire is a great drink if you want to party, and if you’re feeling a bit fancy then add a 6 pack of Fiji Water to wash it all down.
