Our Criteria

Authenticity: A true kolache lover can taste the difference between a real kolache and an imitation. So we aim to find shops that took pride in their kolaches and stayed true to the traditional Czech pastry.
Variety: While we may have our favorite kolache flavors, options are always nice. A good kolache shop should offer a variety of sweet and savory flavors.

From classic fruit fillings to more unique flavors like jalapeno and cheese, a diverse menu keeps customers coming back for more.
Freshness: There’s nothing worse than a stale kolache. The perfect kolache should be fresh, warm and soft.

A good kolache shop should bake their kolaches daily and sell them while they’re still warm. If we could smell the aroma of freshly baked kolaches from outside the shop, we knew we were in for a treat.
Customer Service: The staff should be friendly, knowledgeable, and willing to answer any questions we may have. A good kolache shop should make us feel welcome and appreciated, and we should leave feeling satisfied with our purchase.

Pros

  • Flaky and buttery
  • Rich cream cheese raspberry kolache
  • Savory ham and cheese

Cons

  • Filling not evenly distributed
  • Pricey

Upon entering the establishment, we were immediately drawn in by the warm and inviting atmosphere. The staff was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home.

The aroma of freshly baked kolaches filled the air, adding to the overall sensory experience. But, the kolaches themselves were the star of the show.

With a variety of traditional and creative flavors, we noted that there was something for everyone. The flavors were bold, and the dough was flaky and buttery. We tried ham and cheese, sausage and gravy, and cream cheese and raspberry jelly.

Each kolache was delicious, with the cream cheese raspberry being our favorite. The cream cheese was rich and creamy, and the raspberry jelly added the perfect amount of sweetness and tartness to balance out the flavors.

Despite the overall positive experience, there were a few areas for improvement. We thought the kolaches were a bit too bready, making them somewhat dry and less enjoyable.

We also noticed that the filling was not evenly distributed throughout the kolaches, leaving some bites with more filling than others. Additionally, the prices were a bit on the higher end, and we found ourselves questioning the value that we were getting for our money after a couple.

Pros

  • Friendly staff
  • Huge kolaches
  • Delectable sausage and gravy kolaches
  • Savory cheese grits kolaches

Cons

  • Limited menu
  • Too doughy inside

As Kolache lovers, we decided to try Karma Kolache since we’ve heard so much about them!

We liked the warm and welcoming atmosphere, with friendly staff that made us feel right at home. Despite the limited menu, the kolaches were unique and interesting, and we had difficulty choosing just one.

Upon first glance at the display counter, the sheer size of the kolaches was impressive, and we couldn’t help but lick our lips in anticipation of the tastiness to come.

We ended up getting a few of the cheese grits, sausage and gravy, and pulled pork kolaches.

The kolaches were beautifully presented, and the flavors were spot on. The cheese grits and pulled pork kolaches, in particular, stood out with their warm and comforting flavors that had us coming back for more.

We couldn’t get enough of the pork, which was tender and juicy, and the grits were smooth and flavorful. The sausage and gravy kolache was equally delectable, with its crispy exterior and savory filling combination.

While the kolaches weren’t perfect, as we thought they were too doughy, the flavors and unique combinations of ingredients made up for the minor shortcomings. The cheese grits kolaches, in particular, were a highlight, and we found ourselves craving them long after our visit.

Pros

  • Unique kolache flavors
  • Delicious beef pho kolache
  • Tasty cambodian spinach and atichoke

Cons

  • Limited options
  • Dismissive staff

From what we’ve heard, Koffeteria serves up some of the tastiest unique kolaches in town. Of course, we had to go see for ourselves.

From the moment we walked in, we were hit with a wave of aroma that had our mouths watering. While they don’t have plenty of options, what they do have are different than the typical kolaches.

We first tried their beef pho kolaches. The kolaches were stuffed to the brim with delicious beef, pho broth, and a creamy filling that melted in our mouths.

However, we noted the kolaches were a bit on the smaller side, so you may find yourself wanting to order a couple to satisfy your hunger like we did.

We also tried the Cambodian spinach and artichoke kolache. We thought this one was a true delight, as the combination of flavors was exquisite, and the kolache was the perfect size for a light yet satisfying breakfast.

Unfortunately, despite the tasty kolaches, we noted that Koffeteria suffers from a lack of friendly customer service. We didn’t like how the staff was dismissive and rushed during our visit, which made for a less enjoyable experience.

They seem rushed and overworked, which means that your questions or concerns may go overlooked. So, if you do decide to visit, we suggest going during off-peak hours to avoid long wait times.

Pros

  • Attentive staff
  • Flavorful crawfish and andouille kolache
  • Sweet apple pie kolache

Cons

  • Limited stock

Kolache Shoppe offers a wide selection of delicious kolaches, each with its own unique filling and flavors. From crawfish and andouille kolaches to the classic potato, egg, and cheese kolache, there’s a kolache for everyone.

The staff at the counter greeted us from the moment we walked in. They wasted no time in getting us some fresh kolaches

While we noted the kindness of the staff, we found that their kolaches were limited in stock and had run out of some flavors. However, this was not surprising to us given the popularity of Kolache Shoppe, but it was a downside nonetheless.

Out of all the kolaches we tried, we thought the crawfish and andouille kolache was a real treat. The crawfish filling was fully cooked and bursting with flavor.

Additionally, the sweet, crispy apple kolache was a delicious treat and a welcome addition to the usual savory fillings. It reminded us of eating grandma’s famous homemade apple pie, as it had just the right amount of cinnamon on the apples and wasn’t overwhelmingly sweet either.

Furthermore, we thought it was great that their kolaches were the perfect size—not too big or too small—and that the dough was light and fluffy.

Pros

  • Effortless online ordering
  • Trusted culinary experience
  • Delectable delights
  • Wallet-friendly

Cons

  • Busy during peak seasons

Our experience with Kolache Kafe left us thoroughly impressed, reaffirming their standing as a premier kolache company.

From the moment we stepped in, their exceptional service was evident—prompt and courteous, they ensured our orders were taken with utmost care.

Convenience is key, and Kolache Kafe delivers in spades.

Their online ordering system is a seamless masterpiece, making our selections a breeze. Plus, the option for both delivery and pickup underscores their commitment to catering to our needs.

With a reputation that precedes them, Kolache Kafe lives up to its name. Word of mouth buzzes about their delectable pastries, and rest assured, they don’t disappoint.

The kolaches we sampled were a symphony of flavors, a delightful fusion of traditional and inventive fillings that danced on our taste buds.

In a world where quality often comes with a hefty price tag, Kolache Kafe pleasantly surprised us.

Their reasonable pricing belies the excellence they deliver, ensuring that indulging in their delectable offerings doesn’t dent our wallets.

In an age where mediocrity is rampant, Kolache Kafe sets the bar high. Our visit was a testament to their commitment to excellence, from service to taste, they exude dedication.

Whether you’re a kolache connoisseur or a first-time explorer, this establishment deserves a spot on your culinary radar.

Sadly, they don’t offer discounts on some of their food at the present. We suggest checking their other equally delicious but affordable treats.

Pros

  • Flavorful cream cheese kolaches
  • Fresh fruit kolaches

Cons

  • Lackluster customer service
  • Overcooked sausage

Olde Towne Kolaches is a classic destination for authentic Czech kolaches. At least, that’s what we were told.

Unfortunately, our visit to Olde Towne Kolaches began with lackluster customer service. We were greeted with a polite but disinterested “hello” from the cashier and had to wait several minutes for someone to come over and take our order.

Regardless, we ordered some of their classic kolaches and tried the fruit and cream cheese kolaches. We thought these kolaches were well-made and quite tasty.

We liked the light and fluffy dough, and the fruit and cream cheese fillings were flavorful and not overly sweet. We also thought it was great that they used fresh fruit and were chopped just the right size.

However, we were disappointed with their small sausage kolaches. We didn’t like how the sausage was overcooked and dry—as if it had been sitting out for days.

To top it off, we thought the sausages were also relatively small compared to the sausages they use in authentic kolaches.

The overall atmosphere of Olde Towne Kolaches was also less than desirable. The restaurant was dimly lit and had a rather depressing feel to it.

So, while we wouldn’t say Olde Towne Kolaches sells authentic Czech kolaches, we would say they still have decent kolaches depending on whether you get a fresh batch or not.
