The Top 5 Houston Breweries with Food

The Top 5 Houston Breweries with Food Homepage

Our Criteria

Beer Selection: A great brewery should have a variety of beers available for their customers to try, no matter whether they cater to beginning beer drinkers or experts. Thus, we took into consideration the selection of beers offered at the Houston breweries we observed.
Staff: In the different breweries that we checked out, we observed the interactions of the staff with their customers. Specifically, whether the staff had knowledge about the different types of beers being served as well as the ability to recommend decent tasting beers.
Atmosphere: A brewery atmosphere should be lively yet relaxing. Therefore we took into consideration the comfort level of the customers as well as their own when visiting the selected breweries throughout Houston.
Food: Not every brewery in Houston serves food, but The breweries that do serve food should provide a variety of options. So we examined the menus at the various breweries we visited and took into consideration the taste of the different meals that we tried at each brewery.

Pros

  • Taproom brewery
  • Bold beer selection
  • Vegetarian meals available

Cons

  • Delay in service
  • Mixed up orders

Local Group Brewery is known amongst the people we spoke with for its unique atmosphere of being a brewery within a taproom. Many raved to us about their bold, exciting beer selection.

On the other hand, though, some told us about the rude customer service that they experienced at a Local Group Brewery. After our own observations at Local Group Brewery, we can state that the claims made to us by various customers are partially valid.

First of all, the atmosphere of Local Group Brewery is modern, air-conditioned, and true to the words of others—in a taproom.

We did find the overall theme of Local Group Brewery bewildering, for they have a spiral logo marked on the walls throughout the brewery. Yet, the names of the beers on their menu reference the latest in pop cultures and some astronomical vibes as well.

Regarding their customer service, we were a little disappointed with how long it took to receive food. We waited nearly 30 minutes, and it wasn’t even crowded when we went to Local Group Brewery.

Moreover, the staff at Local Group Brewery got our orders wrong. Thankfully though, we were reimbursed for the wrong orders, and they brought us out the original order free of charge.

Despite this, the staff at Local Group Brewery were not rude to the surrounding customers nor to us. Rather, we liked the positive attitude the staff at Local Group Brewery had when it came to making sure their customers were satisfied, despite any mistakes made.

Additionally, the beer selection at Local Group Brewery is neatly curated. We found ourselves leaning more towards their vast hops selection of beers, but we, of course, tried a few stouts.

While we enjoyed the selection of beers at Local Group Brewery, the food served to us sent our tastebuds to heaven. Yes, this is despite the staff bringing us the wrong order.

Their pork belly gorditas were crunchy, and the Oaxaca cheese mixed with the salsa borracha was the right amount of spicy. By the way, Local Group Brewery does provide vegetarian meals upon request.

Pros

  • German inspired beers
  • Authentic hard seltzers
  • Family-friendly

Cons

  • Limited parking
  • Undercooked fries

Karbach Brewing Co. brings the flavors of German beers to Houston locals while keeping the foods people know and love. The company prides itself on catering to all people, creating exclusively crafted beers meant for anyone to enjoy.

Moreover, many we talked to bragged about how Karbach Brewing Co. is the place to be if you are a beer lover. Of course, the customers we spoke to praised the variety of food choices on their menu and the live concerts Karbach Brewing Co hosts.

Karbach Brewing Co. has something for everyone. At least that’s what we’ve been told.

One of the things we did not like about Karbach Brewing Co. was the difficulties we had with parking. For such a huge brewery, there were little to no parking spaces available.

Furthermore, Karbach Brewing Co. was not located in a safe area to park your car on the street. We recommend parking a few streets away from Karbach Brewing Co. to avoid getting your car towed.

On the other hand, Karbach Brewing Co has a massive outdoor seating area complete with a shaded patio area and a lawn. By the way, we noted a band setting up on the lawn—for what we can only guess to be a concert in the later evening hours.

Although the customer staff treated us kindly, we were impressed by Karbach Brewing Co’s selection of local German beers and their own handcrafted beers. Their IPAs contain flavors varying from bittersweet to citrusy, tropical-tasting hops.

Not to mention Karbach Brewing Co. has its own hard seltzers in a variety of flavors. We ended up sampling their spicy mango and watermelon hard seltzers, which were refreshing and delicious.

Additionally, true to the comments of customers we spoke with, the menu at Karbach Brewing Co. contains a vast selection of shared plates, pretzels, salads, pizza, and more. They even have a kids menu—yes, Karbach Brewing Co. is family-friendly.

As per the recommendation from the waiter, their Karbach burger was flavorful, and the meat was tender. Their cake & bacon challah bun combined with their bacon aioli is what made the burger worth fifteen dollars.

However, the Kennebec fries that came with our burger were undercooked.

Pros

  • Family-friendly
  • Barrel aged collection available
  • Diverse beer styles and flavors

Cons

  • Non engaging customer service
  • Salty pizza

Southern Yankee Beer Company claims to represent a diverse multitude of cultures. They boast that they brew their beers in a variety of styles and flavors.

However, according to customers we spoke to, the customer service at Southern Yankee Beer Company is a little to brag about. Others mentioned to us about the pizza served at Southern Yankee being covered in salt.

To verify these comments, we observed the customer service as we sampled the beers, appetizers, and house pizzas at Southern Yankee Beer Company.

By the way, we did take note not to go on a Sunday since we were informed by those we spoke with that Southern Yankee Beer Company’s kitchen would not be open.

While the service at Southern Yankee Beer Company was not oppressive, the staff at Southern Yankee Beer company did not engage with other customers or us in the slightest. Still, we did take note that all our orders and items are delivered in a timely manner.

We also noted that Southern Yankee Beer Company is a family-friendly place.

Furthermore, we were impressed with the variety of lagers, ales, and IPAs Southern Yankee Beer Company offers its customers. Varying from a classic crisp American lager to a pineapple melon IPA malt and even a dark roasted coffee stout.

We also liked their barrel-aged bottle collection and Southern Yankee Beer Company’s own house wine and hard ciders. So, you don’t need to be a beer lover to enjoy what Southern Yankee Beer Company has to offer, keeping true to the company’s boasts of bringing a diverse multitude of styles and flavors to their customers.

On the other hand, the food that we tried at Southern Yankee beer company was disappointing, to say the least.

The brussels sprouts we tried were over charred, and true to the remarks of those we talked to beforehand, the pizza was salty. (We used our napkins to remove most of the salty seasoning from the pizza.)

Pros

  • Australian themed
  • Knowledgeable staff
  • Vast handcrafted beer selection

Cons

  • Overcooked fries
  • Rotating beer selection

Platypus Brewing transports its customers from Houston all the way to Australia with their Australian-themed decor, dishes, and of course, their beers. At least, that’s what we’ve been told.

After our own experience at platypus brewing, we can testify that platypus brewing does bring the Australian experience all the way to Houston. While we did like their bright decor and modern atmosphere, we honed in on the handcrafted beers brewed at Platypus brewing.

For one, we liked how easy it was to park. Yes, platypus brewing has a parking lot behind the brewery with a variety of spaces, so there is no need to park on the street.

Moreover, everyone we spoke with at platypus brewing was not only knowledgeable about the beer selection offered, but the staff informed us that they constantly rotate their tap list depending on seasonal offerings.

We ourselves were thoroughly impressed with their vast handcrafted Australian beers mixed with a hint of Houston. Such as their Australian ale that is blended with local Houston honey to create tropical notes in their classing Aussie Ale.

Additionally, their IPAS vary from citrus, floral, malty, and dry bitter hops. Do note that depending on the IPA, sampling is offered upon request.

One of the drinks recommended to us by former customers was the Milk’stache Milk Stout. The German malts balanced with the wheat and chocolate malts create a solid, full-bodied beer that had us feeling like children happily drinking a chocolate milkshake.

As for the food offered at platypus brewing, we tried their famous Aussie burger with candied beets and an egg on top. The burger itself was fresh and flavorful with every bite, but the fries were overcooked.

Pros

  • Homey atmosphere
  • Vast food menu
  • Artisan beers

Cons

  • No exotic beer selection

City Acre Brewing is a brewery located on the outskirts of downtown Houston that’s stolen the hearts of those we spoke with. Many told us that City Acre Brewing is a great place for newbies to artisan beer as well as more experienced artisan beer drinkers.

Others related how the staff members at City Acre building are not only knowledgeable about the variety of IPAs handcrafted at City Acre building, but their passion shines through in the positive way they speak to their customers.

We witnessed this to be true for ourselves as we observed some of the staff members walking other customers nearby our table through their extensive artisan beer selection.

We liked how City Acre Brewing created a homey atmosphere for their customers. With its plenty of outdoor seating and firepit, City Acre Brewing doesn’t make it difficult for its customers to relax and take a break from the stresses throughout the day.

The food at City Acre brewing has also earned a reputation among the people we talked to. Despite their vast menu options varying from shareable appetizers, sandwiches, and brunch, many recommended to us one of their famous burgers.

Thus, we tried the Urban Cowboy. While we did like how their in-house pork and bacon patty could be substituted for a vegetable patty, we ended up sticking with the original.

Not only was their patty thick, but their spicy jalapeño ranch dressing brought out the bacon flavors even more so with every bite. Although their shoestring fried onions were plentiful, the cheese on the burger was hardly melted at all.

Regarding the artisan beers city acre brewing offers, we found them to be straightforward and nothing exotic. Although TXPA has lingering tropical flavors, it is cut short by an overwhelming grassy flavor— hardly any backbone.

Still, at a 5.3% IPA, the flavors of a majority of their artisan beers are simple and crisp.
