The 5 Best Bunion Surgery Clinics in Houston Letting You Explore Every Treatment Path with Experts

bunion-surgery-houston-banner

Proven Bunion Experience - Since bunion surgery is typically part of broader podiatry or foot-and-ankle care, we focused on clinics where it is a specialty. These practices regularly treat bunion cases and have a strong track record.

Surgeon Qualifications - To ensure safe, quality care, we prioritized providers with a team of qualified podiatric and orthopedic surgeons. Meaning, they are licensed, board-certified, and accredited by reputable foot care organizations.

Range of Procedures - Different patients call for different options. We chose clinics that offer techniques ranging from traditional and minimally invasive to advanced and more comprehensive surgical procedures.

Patient-Focused Care - We looked for clinics whose patient reviews and testimonials highlight compassionate, attentive care. This counts the availability of follow-up support and rehabilitation services for a guided recovery.

Pricing and Payment Details - Cost, insurance coverage, and flexible payment plans played an important role in our selection. We aimed to highlight practices committed to transparency and patient accessibility.

Our feet are one of those body parts that, when they are not at their best, can really disrupt everything we do. I couldn’t put on running shoes for weeks after spraining my ankle, and my mom fell behind on her errands because of a few sore toes.

These experiences made us more cautious, so much so that I found myself checking my friends’ and cousins’ feet as they walked barefoot around the house. Spotting a bump on some big toes—a bunion, properly called—always made me concerned.

But before I brought it up, I looked up the best bunion surgery clinics in Houston first. Read on to see the recommendations I had ready in case they didn’t know where to start or where to find expert care that can set things right.

Bunion surgery by orthopedic surgeon Taggart T. Gauvain is minimally invasive. At his practice, it’s suited for those with big toe stiffness, foot pain limiting daily activities, and little relief from footwear changes or medication.

You will know where you stand during the thorough pre-op medical evaluation. After surgery, physical therapy sessions follow, though convenient time slots aren’t always guaranteed.

Some patients also find it restrictive that the procedure is offered only as MIS (Minimally Invasive Surgery), and reconstruction is exclusive to flatfoot and cavus foot.

Still, the process is said to be pleasant—a first-timer even liked the care so much she continued visiting regularly. Since Dr. Gauvain is an ankle doctor too, others come in for ankle joint replacement or ankle instability surgery.

We were further reassured by his American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) certification and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) membership. These markers of professionalism extend to clear costs and insurance plans.

Pros

  • Targeted minimally invasive bunion surgery
  • Thorough pre-op medical evaluation
  • Includes post-op physical therapy
  • Experienced foot-and-ankle surgeon
  • ABOS-certification holder & AAOS member
  • Clear costs & insurance

Cons

  • Limited to the MIS procedure
  • Inflexible follow-up session scheduling

There are no words great enough to express how awesome Dr. Gauvain is

“There’s no words great enough to express how Awesome Dr. Gauvain is. My first Surgery in my lifetime an the Man an his Team were outstanding. Every single person who helped with my Surgery, made it pleasant for me. I’m looking forward to keeping Dr. Gauvain an his staff in my Pocket, throughout this new journey. He’s going to put me back on both feet an walking on my right foot again, an doing the things I love to do.I’m looking forward to climbing the Mountains again 😂.”

Fondren Orthopedic Group’s range—covering everything from shoulders to feet—shows in their surgical options for bunion correction. These include Akin, Chevron, and Scarf osteotomies.

ABOS-certified Drs. Bloome, Fukuda, and Loncarich are among the team’s bunion specialists, so you will likely work with one of them to decide on the right approach. Past patients praise their clear explanations, great bedside manners, and caring staff.

That said, some reported feeling talked down to during consultations and waiting hours before being seen. We found costs to be occasionally confusing, as well, with bills containing surprise charges.

On the upside, the clinic accepts a wide range of insurers, and the online patient portal helps manage payments and post-op rehab appointments. Add in the availability of conservative bunion care, such as footwear advice and physical therapy.

Beyond bunion surgery under general orthopedic care, the surgeons’ fellowship training also qualifies them for reconstructive trauma, joint replacement, and more.

Pros

  • Wide-ranging expertise & treatments
  • Multiple bunion surgical options
  • ABOS-certified, fellowship-trained surgeons
  • Great bedside manners & caring staff
  • Accepts insurance
  • Convenient patient portal
  • Offers conservative bunion care

Cons

  • Unfriendly consultations & long waits
  • Confusing costs with surprise charges

Dr. Bloome’s bedside manner is outstanding—he’s friendly and caring

“Dr. Bloome’s bedside manner is outstanding. He’s friendly and caring. Both him and his nurse, Cristal, have been understanding and prompt with their responses. Cristal is so sweet on the phone. When we arrived for our first appointment at Fondren, it was intimidating. We expected to spend the whole day there because there are so many people. We were there less than 90 minutes. Fondren was recommended to us by a friend and we are so grateful. We will definitely recommend them to anyone that needs an orthopedic surgeon.”

At the enormous Texas Medical Center (TMC), home to over 2,000 physicians, Dr. Michael Greaser is the designated orthopedic surgeon. He sees patients there as part of the UT Physicians Orthopedics practice.

Certified by the ABOS and affiliated with the AAOS and AOFAS (American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society), Dr. Greaser treats those with bunions and other foot or ankle conditions. They appreciate his detailed post-op care walkthroughs.

That’s because bunion surgery is only performed when non-surgical options—bunion pads, medications, and customized shoe inserts—don’t work. Once it’s settled that a surgical approach is needed, it may be minimally invasive or involve an osteotomy.

Any issues noted were mainly due to inadequate pre-surgery testing. In one case, missing X-rays led to less effective results. It didn’t help that the front desk staff sometimes gave unclear information about fees and insurance.

Fortunately, TMC’s UT Physicians allow patients access to all 80 specialties and subspecialties—we even encountered individuals visiting for vascular surgery.

Pros

  • Experienced orthopedic surgeon
  • Board certification & professional affiliations
  • Extensive foot-and-ankle expertise
  • Detailed post-op care guidance
  • Minimally invasive surgery options
  • Access to 80 other specialties

Cons

  • Occasional inadequate pre-op testing
  • Unclear front desk information

Explained clearly and answered all my questions

“Explained clearly and answered all my questions, those ask and thought of… Very good experience.”

CLS Health may be known for primary care, but its board-certified podiatric surgeons and orthopaedic specialists prove the practice goes far beyond that. Bunion surgery, sports injury care, and regenerative joint therapies, to name a few.

Focusing on bunion surgery, CLS offers three options: minimally invasive, Lapiplasty 3D Correction, and traditional procedures such as osteotomy and fusion techniques. What patients often highlight about each one is the attentive, supportive staff.

However, there were times when crucial information (like same-day lab work) wasn’t shared, leaving patients unprepared. The lack of follow-through on insurance approvals also gave us pause, as others had to pay out-of-pocket.

The good news is that costs are generally covered in detail during consultations. Likewise, the surgeons’ FAAOS (Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons) designations reinforce confidence in their professional standards.

Plus, those needing help with heart, eye, chronic pain, and even urinary concerns find it at CLS.

Pros

  • Broad podiatric & orthopedic services
  • Multiple bunion surgery options
  • Attentive, supportive staff
  • Detailed cost discussions
  • FAAOS-designated surgeons
  • Primary care & other specialties available

Cons

  • Occasionally missing crucial information
  • Inconsistent follow-through on insurance approvals

They were incredibly helpful and patient, answering every question

“They were incredibly helpful and patient, answering every question I had without ever making me feel like I was a bother. I truly appreciate their kindness, professionalism, and genuine care. Highly recommend!”

Sanders Clinic is led by Dr. Mark S. Sanders, named one of Houston’s “Top Docs” by H Texas Magazine. But it’s his ABOS certification, AAOS fellowship, and private practice since 1986 that drew us in.

Through the years, patients have thanked him for great bunion surgeries—whether using Lapiplasty 3D Correction or traditional 2D techniques. With the help of friendly assistant Yasmin, preparations go smoothly.

These positive experiences also count for arthroscopic knee and shoulder procedures.

The same can’t be said for post-op bunion care. While most benefit from reconditioning programs, some clients mentioned limited foot movement after boot removal—made worse by ineffective medication—and persistent swelling even three months later.

Encouragingly, the clinic is easy to reach, and follow-ups to address concerns are prioritized. This accessibility carries over to cost breakdowns and insurance management for simpler payments.

Moreover, given his subspecialty certificate in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, Dr. Sanders is sought by athletes for Accelerated ACL Rehabilitation.

Pros

  • Led by “Top Doc”
  • ABOS certificate & AAOS fellowship holder
  • Over 30 years in the industry
  • Friendly, supportive staff
  • Accessible clinic & follow-ups
  • Specialized ACL rehab expertise

Cons

  • Lingering post-op bunion issues
  • Reports of ineffective post-op medication

It wasn’t hard to get hold of him or his staff whenever needed

“The main thing I like about my experience with Dr. Mark Sanders is that he is an old school, down to earth doctor. He & his staff treat you as family. It was not hard to get a hold of him or his staff whenever needed. Yasmin his assistant walked me through everything step by step. He even reached out to me on the 1st weekend post surgery, while his office was closed to check up on me & that all my questions were answered. Other than that, my surgery was very effective & I’m finally pain free. I will definitely come back in the future if needed & I will recommend him to my friends & family that are in need of a great & experienced orthopedic surgeon. Happy patient!”
