The 11 Best Recording Studios In Houston

The 5 Best Recording Studios In Houston Homepage

How We Picked

Budget: As musicians, we know it takes time to create a quality song. Depending on the recording studio, the price may range per hour. So, we believe it’s wise to know how many hours you plan to spend in a recording studio. Therefore, we took budgeting into consideration when choosing a recording studio.
Equipment and Facilities: Most recording studios provide basic equipment, but some instruments may be rented for a fee. Not all studios have pianos, drum sets, or vintage amplifiers. So we did our best to find recording studios that offered instruments to use to make any recording studio experience more convenient.
Reputation: More often than not, the best recording studios have a history and are well known for their signature sound. This helps create future potential marketing benefits for any recording studio album. So we looked at different recording studios with a good reputation locally and among musicians.
Sound Samples: Most recording studios contain sound samples. If not, it is possible to ask in advance. We consider sound samples because serious musicians want their music to sound as professional as possible. Sound samples enable you to figure out if a recording studio can record for you the quality of music you want.

Cons

  • Bring your own guitar capo

We’d heard many wonderful things about Lucky Run Studio, so we decided to try it out. By the way, we were not able to book through their website – we had to call the listed number.

The moment we stepped into the lobby, we were greeted by the owner, Michael. We couldn’t help but glance at all the records displayed on the lobby walls from multiple Grammy-winning artists.

But Michael was very down to earth and answered any questions we had about the history of lucky runs studio modestly. Although we already had booked Studio B, Michael was delighted to let us look at the other studio rooms.

Studio A had a complete custom drum set available for us to use, including pianos, guitars, bass, and microphones. As we looked around the room in awe, Michael explained to us that most people use Studio A for full album production.

We made a mental note of that for the future, but we only had a couple of songs we wanted to record this time. Besides, we already had made a budget allowance in advance.

Nevertheless, Studio B did not disappoint us in the slightest. The studio had guitars, keyboards, basses, and amps that we were free to use.

But before we started recording, Michael allowed us to listen to a few samples he had done with previous artists in that same studio.

Needless to say, the quality was amazing and clear. There was no static from the microphones at all.

Not surprisingly, our recordings came out state of the art and professionally clear.

If it wasn’t for Michael working tirelessly to help us produce the song until it was completed to perfection, we wouldn’t have had a high-quality song.

Pros

  • Work alongside a sound engineer
  • Credit cards are accepted

Cons

  • No live instruments available.

To start, booking our session with The Original Barren Studios was a breeze. While we were able to make a booking online, we did have to specify which location because they do have two recording studios in Houston.

Right away, we were greeted at the door by friendly professional staff. They then led us into the lounge area, where we waited to meet the engineer we would be working with.

As far as we could see, multiple music awards and records adorned the lounge walls. It was an awe-inspiring atmosphere for any musician to relax in.

It wasn’t long before the engineer we were working with stepped out of one of the recording studios to meet us. While they offer both different sound engineers levels, we worked with a senior engineer.

By the way, the minimum to work with a senior engineer is 3 hours, at 70 per hour.

When we walked inside the recording studio, we were impressed with how clean everything was. We especially didn’t mind the separate sound booths in the room.

Before we got to work on our songs, our sound engineer asked us for a brief background of what we’ve been working on. He explained that it would help him understand what type of sound we were looking for.

While there are no live instruments available to play on, the quality of the microphones is top performer quality.

In addition, the sound engineer we worked with was able to take our recordings and transcend them to another level by adding different soundtrack instrument loops to create an Ultra HD quality song.

  • Music engineer for hire.

The Band Barracks is one of the cleanest, most secure, and professionally run facilities that we’ve ever been to.

When we first arrived at Band Barracks, a staff member kindly offered to help us bring our keyboards in.

Our eyes roamed around the entire parking lot, noting the massive security measures—an 8 to 10-foot fence surrounded the entire parking lot. Impressive, we thought immediately.

At the entrance doors of the building, we smiled up at the security cameras. We followed the staff member to one of the available recording studio rooms.

We also noted how all the studio rooms have a keypad code entry in case you forget the key.

Nevertheless, the recording room was exactly what we were looking for. A vocal booth had been set up along with a mic, monitor speakers, a computer monitor, an interface, keyboard controller, headphone amp, and headphones.

All we needed to do was plug our keyboard and our computer.

Thankfully, we could connect our gear to their system quickly and easily.

While we didn’t rent any other instruments, we did have the option if we wanted to. We also appreciated that the staff member made sure everything was working properly before leaving.

Despite being next door to other musicians in their own individual studio rooms, not even a drop of a penny could be heard.

Although the sound quality of the speakers was decent, the soundproofing was impeccable!

But what sealed the deal for us was the free wifi!

We had heard SugarHill Recording Studios is one of the longest-running recording studios in the United States. Naturally, we had to come and see what all the hype was about.

But, a simple walk down the lobby made us understand why this place is a go-to for aspiring musicians.

In the lobby, there are two glass cases filled with various autographs and memorabilia from famous musicians who have worked with SugarHill Recording Studios. Such as Destiny’s Child and many others.

As much as we wanted to admire the rich history belonging to SugarHill, we didn’t want to get left behind by the studio manager leading us to the room we booked.

Even going down the hallways left an impression on us—with every step, they lit up with neon colors. Stickers and photos of various bands lined the hallway walls.

The studio manager even let us peek our head into the reverb chamber and test it out.

We can’t leave out the newest addition to SugarHill—a green screen video room!

While we weren’t planning on making any music videos, the room seemed extremely tempting to use.

Nevertheless, we were happy to find our recording studio had an array of musical instruments for us to use, varying from piano to acoustic bass.

Not to mention, the sound quality of our vocals and the reverb off the walls had us feeling like professional musicians.

After our experience, we understand why SugarHill is worth every penny.

Cons

  • Lack of sound engineers
  • Apple Pay is not accepted

Our experience with Wire Road Studios has us blown away. Even the outside of the building had us doing a double-take.

The high ceilings and the thick glass for the ultimate isolation provided a unique experience for us as we followed the manager down the halls to studio A.

We couldn’t believe our eyes when we stepped inside Studio A. Inside was a beautiful Steinway B grand piano and an array of instruments such as keyboard, drums, and amplifiers.

Not including the extensive selection of analog gear, digital plug-ins, and their immense microphone collection.

Although two other studios are available, they have different functions, such as video production and voiceover work. The manager kindly explained to us that both studios B and C were available to us, but at an extra charge.

However, the kitchen, the lounge, and the outdoor patio were free for all. So when we checked out the lounge, we almost sat back on the couch to play video games on their X-Box 360.

Nevertheless, we went back to studio A and found ourselves not wanting to leave for hours. We loved having all of the instruments and equipment at our disposal.

For example, the grand piano had a natural reverb that echoes throughout the studio walls, perfect for creating the base melody for any song.

While we wished we could have had a sound engineer available for us to work with, we were just as satisfied creating music on our own.

Cons

Cornerstone Music is a family-owned business that’s around to help anyone move forward and reach their musical goals.

Being family-owned, they’re not pressured by a national corporation compared to others so they’re able to offer a relaxed yet professional creative environment, and this is something we like about them.

We like that they don’t focus on their clients as simply clients, but as people. This is why they’re able to give a more personal service.

Their owner, Jeff Marzolla, has been a music instructor for well over three decades. He’s also an Engineer during recording sessions, and can also play the roles of Producer, Collaborator, or Instrumentalist.

Editing, Mixing, and Mastering of material are done based on the level and budget the artist requires. If you need graphic design, they can add that to the package to which we think is pretty neat.

Their services include Instrument Instruction, Recording, Artist Development, and General Maintenance.

They mainly service the Houston area, but they do have services that can be accessible globally.

The rates for their services are also available on their website.

Speaking of their website, we do think its design can be updated and more information about them—especially contact details—can be placed.

All in all, we recommend!
