Great Places To Practice Open Water Swimming in Houston

Up for an adventure? If you’re a lover of the waves, then you might be interested in trying out open water swimming in Houston.

This fun activity can be done with both family and friends, and might even be a great idea for a day date with your significant other.

There are plenty of places to practice open water swimming, but not all water forms are clean or safe for the activity. So, we compiled a list of the best spots in Houston you should try out.

To be safe, it is best that you ask your dermatologist or your doctor if you have any existing skin or health conditions. We also recommend you research on safety paraphernalia you should have on your person if you’re still not an experienced swimmer.

Also, if you’re new to this, we recommend booking an appointment with your favorite massage therapist in Houston to help ease your muscle aches.

That said, let’s dive right in.

Lake Longhorn

Lake Longhorn is the location of many triathlon events, including Swim Across America’s Houston Open Water Swim. With that, it’s safe to say that it’s a tested and proven place to practice, and even compete, for open swimming.

In fact, its scenic views made it an amazing celebration and wedding venue in Houston.

This multisport training lake also accommodates kayaking, paddleboarding, and scuba diving activities. What we particularly love about it is they not only offer equipment rentals, but also certifications for anyone interested in undergoing diving training.

However, they don’t have a lifeguard on duty, so guests have to swim at their own risk. The staff also does not allow pets in the area.

Lake Livingston State Park

Located at the Livingston State Park is one of the largest lakes in Texas, where experienced swimmers can try out open water swimming in its depths.

Less experienced swimmers are encouraged to test out the shallower areas. However, these areas are also the standby area for boat rentals, so this set-up may not be the most convenient.

Aside from open water swimming, this place is also a great place for bird-watching, fishing, boating, canoeing, paddle boarding, and picnicking.

Twin Lakes

This is one of the top picks for open water swimming in Houston for its accessibility and calm waters.

It must be noted that this is a private property, so it will require payments and some rules to follow. Nevertheless, this has become a great summer getaway, and is even the location of the open water swim training of the Houston Racing Triathlon Club.

There are also no lifeguards on duty at Twin Lakes, so it is best that you wear your safety paraphernalia when you go out to swim.

Sylvan Beach

Hailed as one of the nicest beaches in Houston, Sylvan Beach offers the classic summer swimming experience.

With its fine sand, gentle waves, and clean waters, even inexperienced swimmers are confident with practicing open water swimming there.

Moreover, this beach is part of a historic park in Galveston Bay. So you’ll have plenty to do once you’re done swimming for the day.
