What is the Baytown Nature Center?

The Baytown Nature Center is a 500-acre nature park bordered by the Burnet, Crystal, and Scott Bays. It has a diverse array of ecosystems, from hardwood uplands to tidal marshes and freshwater wetlands.
What was once a residential community called Brownwood, has now become a haven for both wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts boasting a range of amenities.

The nature center is now made up of 2 peninsulas. The San Jacinto Point is the recreational area with amenities for water activities like fishing piers and walkways that line the shore.
The smaller peninsula is also home to an observation platform, tables and benches, and the children’s playground.
The Natural Area, the bigger of the two peninsulas was left mostly untouched to serve as a habitat for animals from birds, aquatic animals, and mammals. The ecosystems you can find here include forests, marshes, grass fields, and ponds.

Things to Know (Fees if there are any, booking details, parking situation)
You can only buy tickets to the Baytown Nature Center on site.
Ticket prices are $1 for children and $4 for anyone older than 14 years old. If you’re a frequent visitor, we suggest getting their annual pass for $30 or $65 for 6 family members which grants you unlimited access to the park.
Best Time to Go
The best time to go to the nature center is during early mornings on weekdays. Not only is the center less crowded during this time, but it’s cooler too. Plus, bugs are less active then while fish are closer to the surface while feeding.
They have no set operational hours, but the nature center opens half an hour before sunrise and closes half an hour after sunset.
The Baytown Nature Center is open all year long, but they are closed on Christmas and Thanksgiving.
How to Get There
To get to the Baytown Nature Center from Houston, find your way to the I-10 eastbound and then take the Baytown Spur 330 exit, followed by the Bayway Drive exit. Continue straight and turn right at the first corner.
After going straight on Bayway Drive for 2 miles, the nature center will come up on your right. Parking is available right in front of the entrance.
Tips to Remember
- Wear clothes that will cover your skin or slap on sunscreen if you’re going to spend a better part of the day at the nature center since it doesn’t have a lot of shade.
- Wearing tight fitting long pants that you can tuck into your shoes or boots is recommended if you’re going to wade through the grasslands in the area.
- The Baytown Nature Center closes during bad weather, so make sure you follow their Facebook Page for constant updates.
- There aren’t a lot of informational signs around the center, so make sure you drop by the education center to grab pamphlets if you want to learn more.
- No pets are allowed on the premises.
