Visiting one of the many parks in Houston is a great way to stretch out your legs and breathe in some fresh air!
Out of all the parks in the city, Meyer Park is one of our go-to places for a little R&R because there are loads of things to do aside from being zen with nature.
Let’s explore all of the things you can do in and around the park and where to fuel up after a tiring but fulfilling day out and about.
What is Meyer Park?
Meyer Park is a public park and historical site that sits across 280 acres of land. It’s located in the Spring area bordering Houston, offering an array of activities and amenities for outdoor enthusiasts.
The park’s history started in the 1970’s when the Klein Soccer Club won a match that granted them the right to rename the park off Cypress Drive in Harris County Precinct 4.
David Clough, the president of the club at that time, wanted to name the park after Elizabeth Kaiser Meyer whose grandfather, Ernest Henry Kaise, was one of the earliest settlers in the community.
Elizabeth also made a name for herself by being an active member in the neighborhood. She continued running the general store her father had put up for 40 years and stayed active in the church her grandfather also founded.
She also spearheaded community efforts that centered on schooling and even managed a little league baseball team. It’s because of these efforts and contributions that the park was named Meyer Park after Elizabeth got married to Fred Meyer.

Pro Tip:
It’s better to go on weekdays when there are less people.
But, if you can only make it on weekends, make sure you check the posters near the park if there are youth soccer tournaments being held at the time you want to visit because they make parking here a suburban nightmare! *
What can I see and do at Meyer Park in Houston?
Check Out the Archaeological Site
In 2005, a remarkable discovery was made in Meyer Park. A 6.8-acre archaeological site earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places after more than 2,000 artifacts like pottery, stone fragments, arrowheads, and darts were recovered there.
These artifacts, which are now housed at the archeological laboratory in the
University of Texas in Austin, confirms that Native Americansikely used the area beside Cypress Creek by Meyer park as a camping base for thousands of years.
To celebrate the history of the native hunters and gatherers that called the area home for thousands of years and to educate the next generations, a four-panel creek-side educational sign was erected in Meyer Park.
The signs tell the story of how investigators discovered soil charred by charcoal that point to the fact that fires had been lit at the site. Tools made from flint and petrified wood were also discovered all around the area.
These native people continued using the site until European settlement forced them to find new homes. The site serves as a tangible connection to the past and highlights the rich cultural history of the area.
Aside from the main panels. There are signs throughout the park that tell you the story of nomadic prehistoric people who hunted and fished in this location around 8,000 to 10,000 years ago.
Pro Tip:
Make sure you keep an eye out for smaller signs dotted around the archaeological site area that mark specific places and what they were used for before. Standing in the same spot natives did hundreds of years ago is a weird but thrilling experience!

Play a Softball or Baseball Game
Sports enthusiasts can partake in the thrill of softball or baseball at Meyer Park’s dedicated fields. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a beginner, these fields offer the perfect space to practice your pitching, batting, and fielding skills.

Pro Tip:
Check the park’s schedule for organized softball or baseball games. If you’re looking to join a league, reach out to local sports organizations or community groups for more information.
Shoot Some Hoops at the Basketball Court
Basketball lovers can showcase their skills at the basketball court within Meyer Park. You can join in on a friendly game or simply enjoy shooting hoops while enjoying the fresh air in the outdoor court.
The well-maintained court provides an ideal space for both casual and competitive basketball activities. It’s only a halfcourt and almost always in use, so make sure you try and get there early to get a game in.
Pro Tip:
Bring your own basketball to the court. They don’t have them there! Try to keep an eye on them too, as some kids play in the area and might borrow yours without asking.
Grill It Up at the Barbecue Pavilion
Meyer Park offers a designated barbecue pavilion where visitors can gather with family and friends for a delicious outdoor feast.
The pavilion provides covered seating, picnic tables, and barbecue pits, creating a perfect setting for enjoying a grilled meal amidst the park’s natural surroundings.
You’ll have to bring your own charcoal, lighter fluid, and grilling utensils though. Be sure to clean up after your meal!
Pro Tip:
There are a few BBQ stations scattered around the park if you want to avoid the crowds at the pavilion! But, people are allowed to move those around, so they’re never at the same place twice.
Sit Back and Relax at the Gazebo
For those seeking a peaceful retreat, the gazebo at Meyer Park offers a serene spot to unwind and enjoy the surrounding greenery.
Whether you’re seeking shade from the sun or a quiet place to read a book, the gazebo provides a tranquil atmosphere for relaxation and contemplation.
Pro Tip:
After a long day at the park, the crowd likes to gather at the gazebo to watch the sunset.
We suggest getting there an hour or so beforehand if you want to find a good spot to watch. If you don’t mind the heat, you should grab a seat by the edge of the gazebo for a full view of the sunset.
Take a Stroll on One of the Walking Trails
Meyer Park features a network of walking trails, catering to both leisurely strolls and more adventurous hikes.
The paved trails offer easy accessibility and are perfect for a relaxed walk, while the nature trails allow visitors to immerse themselves in the park’s lush landscapes and observe local plants and a few friendly animals here and there.
Pro Tip:
If you’re planning on a walk along the nature paths, you should really bring some insect repellent if you don’t want to come home with more red spots than you had before coming!
Take a Hike or Ride a Bike
Hiking and biking at Meyer Park allow you to immerse yourself in nature while enjoying the park’s picturesque landscapes. The trails wind through wooded areas, offering a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Whether you prefer a leisurely stroll or an invigorating bike ride, the park’s trails cater to all levels of fitness and experience. Don’t forget to stay on designated trails and be mindful of other park visitors.
Before setting off on a hike or bike ride, you should familiarize yourself with the trail maps available at the park entrance. Bringing a friend or letting someone know about your plans is advisable.
Pro Tip:
The soil along the bike trails can be a little soft and muddy during the rainy season from May to October, so try not to schedule biking trips then or just be extra careful!
Explore the Duck Pond
Meyer Park features a charming duck pond that provides a serene and picturesque setting. You can take a leisurely walk around the pond and watch the graceful ducks gliding through the water.
You should keep an eye out for some birds and even turtles that live near the pond. If you have binoculars or a good camera, they can enhance your bird watching experience.
Pro Tip:
If you’re considering bringing some bread to feed the ducks, you can! But, be warned, in our experience, the ducks can get too excited sometimes.
Go Fishing at the Lake
Fishing enthusiasts will find delight in Meyer Park’s fishing lake. You can cast your line and try your luck at catching rainbow trout, bass, and catfish that call the lake home.
Whether you’re an experienced angler or a beginner, this serene fishing spot provides a peaceful escape and the chance to reconnect with nature.
The Texas Parks and Recreation Department stocks the lake with fish yearly, so you’ll almost certainly go home with a catch of the day. Unless of course, you’re a bit unlucky like we can be sometimes!
Pro Tip:
Check local fishing regulations and obtain any required permits before fishing. Don’t forget to bring your own fishing gear, bait, and a cooler to keep your catch fresh. Remember to practice catch-and-release to help preserve the park’s ecosystem.
Have a Picnic
Meyer Park has a lot of picnic areas with tables and benches, providing an ideal setting for a delightful outdoor picnic. Whether you’re planning a family gathering or a romantic lunch for two, there’s bound to be space you can use.
If you’d rather sit on the ground, you can also just spread out a blanket and enjoy your meal!
Pro Tip:
If you enjoy having a picnic on the grass, make sure you bring something heavy to weigh your blankets down as it can get pretty windy in the open fields at the park. It’s better to bring drinks in cans instead of pouring them into plastic cups too!
Bring the Kids to the Playgrounds
Meyer Park has 2 playgrounds for kids, one for older kids with more exciting features and one is dedicated to the younger ones with safer options to play with.
The one for the older kids has everything from swings and slides to climbing walls and monkey bars. A sandbox, some hopscotch areas, and low see-saws offer plenty of choices for the younger children to explore.
Pro Tip:
There are benches scattered with clear views of the playgrounds so you can take a seat while still keeping an eye on the kids!
Exercise at One of the Workout Stations
For fitness enthusiasts, Meyer Park provides workout stations equipped with various exercise equipment. Take advantage of these facilities to engage in a full-body workout, including strength training, stretching, and cardiovascular exercises.
The workout stations offer a unique outdoor fitness experience amidst the park’s natural surroundings. So if you’re looking for somewhere less cramped than the gym to work out in, the park’s just right for you
Pro Tip:
Before using the workout stations, read the guidelines of each piece of equipment. Don’t forget to wipe them down before and after use. You can never be too careful!
Let Your Furry Friends Run Wild
Meyer Park understands that dogs are part of the family, which is why it offers dedicated dog areas where your furry companions can enjoy the outdoors. They even have a small dog and big dog part to avoid any incidents.
These specially designated spaces provide a safe and controlled environment for dogs to socialize, exercise, and play freely. You can let your canine friend off the leash and watch them have a tail-wagging good time.
Pro Tip:
Make sure to bring waste bags and promptly clean up after your dog. You can just bring a bowl for your dog because there are hoses and faucets around the park you can get water from.
Explore the Nearby Cypress Creek
Tucked away within the grounds of Meyer Park, the Cypress Creek is another location in the park you can explore with friends and family. The creek has been largely left untouched, so walking by has a way of letting you connect with nature.
If you stay near the creek near sunset, you might catch a glimpse of dragonflies flying around, or even fireflies lighting up the surface of the water when it gets a bit darker.
Pro Tip:
You are not allowed to go into the water, plus the water can be muddy especially during the rainy season, so it’s best to admire the creek from a safe distance.
