How did White Linen Night start?

White Linen Festival’s roots originate from New Orleans, according to an article by Heights Blog. New Orleans locals used to wear white linen to beat the heat during hot summers. 

Men wore white suits and hats while women adorned white dresses with wide-brimmed hats. This was especially popular before the mass use of air-conditioning in buildings and vehicles. 

Decades later, in 1984, the World’s Fair was held near the city’s rundown Warehouse District. This event led to an overhaul of the area that turned old buildings into lofts, condos, and mainly art galleries.

The owners of the businesses in the area decided to pay homage to the white linen worn by the old residents of the area. It spread through word of mouth. 

In the early 1990s, the owners of the art galleries, along with members of the community, officially launched White Linen Night to promote art interest. And it became a regular and beloved event in New Orleans.

This New Orleans tradition was held yearly until Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. Many residents of the city moved to Houston and they brought their culture and traditions with them. 

Couple Chris and Kay Thayer had been staying in Houston for a year when they were inspired to adopt the White Linen Night tradition in the Heights neighborhood in 2006. And it has been an annual event ever since.
