As you approach Huntsville on I-45S, be sure to keep an eye out for signs indicating the detour onto Highway 19. Exiting I-45S at this point, you’ll embark on a pleasant drive along Highway 19, leading you south towards Riverside. 

Once in Riverside, you can conveniently connect with Highway 190. Continuing east on Highway 190, you’ll be treated to picturesque landscapes, eventually bringing you to the Galveston area.

Highway 6S Route

For those seeking to completely avoid Houston, the Highway 6S route presents an excellent option. Beginning in the northern part of Waco, Texas, this route takes you on an exciting journey towards Galveston. 

As you travel south on Highway 6S, stay alert for signs directing you to Highway 35. Taking the exit onto Highway 35, you’ll head southeast, embarking on a scenic drive through charming towns and countryside. 

Continuing on Highway 35, you’ll eventually reach Angleton, where you can connect with Highway 288. By proceeding south on Highway 6, you’ll be led directly to the captivating destination of Galveston.

Option 2: Via US 290-E 

Another viable route for reaching Galveston while circumventing Houston is the US 290-E route. To begin this journey, head east on US 290 until you reach the Bryan-College Station area. 

As you approach Bryan-College Station, keep an eye out for signs indicating the detour onto Highway 6. Exiting onto Highway 6 south, you’ll embark on an adventure through lovely Texas landscapes. 

Continuing along Highway 6, you’ll eventually arrive at Hempstead, where you’ll merge onto Highway 290 Business and continue east. 

Following the path of Highway 290 Business, you’ll encounter the charming town of Waller, where you’ll exit onto FM 362. From there, proceed south on FM 362 until you reach Highway 35, which will guide you directly to the sun-soaked shores of Galveston.

What route from the south can I take to Galveston without passing through Houston? 

You can easily get to Galveston from the South without passing by Houston by traveling along the coast.

Begin by heading north on Interstate 37 (I-37), taking in the coastal views as you make your way to Corpus Christi. From there, merge onto State Highway 358 East, also known as the South Padre Island Drive. 

Cross the JFK Causeway to reach North Padre Island, then continue east on State Highway 22, crossing the Queen Isabella Causeway to South Padre Island. Follow State Highway 100 East through Port Isabel and merge onto State Highway 48 North. 

Connect with State Highway 100 East again which will eventually merge with State Highway 4 East. Continue through Hitchcock and turn right onto Farm to Market Road 2004. Turn left onto FM 1764 West. Continue until you reach I-45 towards Galveston. 

What route from the east can I take to Galveston without passing through Houston? 

You can get to Galveston from the east without passing by Houston by taking the Galveston Ferry at Port Bolivar. 

Take a picturesque route to Galveston from the east without passing through Houston. Start by following TX-65 E to TX-124 S/Gulfway Dr. Drive south for about 45 miles, enjoying scenic views of marshlands and the Gulf of Mexico. 

Arrive at the Port Bolivar – Galveston Ferry terminal and take a short and scenic ferry ride to Galveston Island. Explore attractions like the historic Strand District, Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, and museums showcasing the city’s rich history.

From the west, what routes can I take to Galveston while avoiding Houston?

Start your trip by making your way to I-35 S. Stay in the second lane from the right to merge onto TX-71 E. Continue for about 87 miles until you turn into I-10 for about 76 miles. As you approach Houston, prepare for a slight detour.

Take exit 768B for I-45 South, heading towards Galveston. Stay on I-45 S for approximately 49 miles, marveling at the scenic beauty of the Gulf Coast region. Once there, you can choose between 2 exits.

Exit 1A for Broadway Street/TX-342 Spur will lead you into Galveston’s vibrant downtown area, where you can explore its historic architecture, charming shops, and restaurants.
