What is the “We Love Houston” sign?
The “We Love Houston” sign is a massive mural-style installation located in the heart of Houston. Its bright, bold letters pay homage to the city’s unique culture and history.
Back in 2013, the Houston First Corporation, a nonprofit that promotes tourism and economic development in the city, came up with the idea for the sign.
They hired a local artist named David Adickes to create this huge sculpture that would greet visitors to the city. He’s famous for his ginormous sculptures of famous people like George Washington and Sam Houston.
Inspired by the “Hollywood” sign in Los Angeles, Adickes wanted to create a cool landmark that really showed off Houston’s unique vibe. He started working on it in 2014, and after a lot of building, the sign was unveiled in October 2015.
The sign itself is a large-scale sculpture made from steel, covered with brightly colored panels made from recycled aluminum. It measures 21 feet long and 10 feet tall, making it pretty hard to miss!
The colors of the sign are bright and cheerful, with shades of pink, orange, and green that reflect the city’s vibrant personality. “We Love Houston” is written in big, bold letters with a heart replacing the word “Love.”
The sign has become a popular destination for photo opportunities and social media posts. It’s a testament to the city’s unique spirit and personality, and provides a fun and colorful backdrop for visitors to the area.
Whether it’s in its original form or modified to reflect a particular moment in time, the “We Love Houston” sign will always hold a special place in the hearts of Houstonians.
Where is the “We Love Houston” sign located?
You can visit the iconic “We Love Houston” sign near Dallas Street, behind the 8th Wonder Brewery.
The “We Love Houston” sign was originally located on the corner of Westheimer and Taft Street in Montrose, the sign was a popular spot for tourists and locals alike to take photos.
The sign was created in 2013 in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. In 2018, the sign was temporarily removed from its original location due to construction in the area.
However, when it was time to return the sign to its spot, the community faced a problem – the sign had become too much of a beloved fixture to be placed back in a busy intersection.
Instead, a group of volunteers organized and raised funds to move the sign to a new location in the Heights neighborhood. The sign was carefully disassembled and transported to its new home.
The move was a community effort, with dozens of volunteers working together to reassemble the sign and make sure it was securely in place.
Today, the “We Love Houston” sign continues to be a popular spot for visitors to the city, and serves as a testament to the strength and resilience of Houstonians. You can find it in the city’s midtown area, near the intersection of Heights Boulevard and 11th Street.
It’s situated in a small park surrounded by trees, benches, and green space offering a tranquil respite from the city’s busy streets. It’s perfect to relax, unwind, enjoy a book, people-watch, walk your dog and for children to play in.
