Child Care Program (Housing and Community Development)

This program aims to provide high-quality child care and support services for low and moderate-income working parents. It also caters to those seeking employment or attending training. 

The service providers’ goal is to offer enriching and nurturing experiences for children while also providing relief from isolation and alienation among working parents. The program caters to children aged between 0 and 12 years old.

Throughout Houston, nine non-profit agencies are providing these services, with five of them offering after school care.

Juvenile Delinquency Program (Housing and Community Development)

This program aims to provide various educational, counseling, training, and empowering opportunities to discourage juvenile delinquency and promote character development.

The service providers specifically target delinquency in areas such as substance abuse, gang involvement, teenage sexuality and pregnancy, school dropouts, educational remediation, unemployment, and homelessness. 

The program caters to participants aged between 6 to 21 years old, with afterschool programs available for those aged between 6 to 17 years old.

Throughout Houston, nine non-profit agencies are providing these services, with six of them offering after school programs.

YOUTH Coalition (Health and Human Services)

United Minds Youth Leadership Advisory Council (Department of Neighborhoods)

This program operates on a traditional one-on-one mentoring model where mentors are matched with mentees based on compatibility and shared interests. 

The primary purpose of the mentor-mentee relationship is for both parties to spend quality time together, and planning activities is primarily the mentor’s responsibility. 

Activities can vary greatly, ranging from recreational and entertainment-based to academic support or exposure to new opportunities. Spending time together and having meaningful conversations are also encouraged. 

Technology-Driven Resources

The Houston Police Department is using technology to improve safety in EaDo. 

The department has implemented a real-time crime center that provides officers with access to real-time crime data and analytics, which can help officers to quickly respond to crimes in progress. 

In August of 2001, the 311 Houston Service Helpline was implemented by the City of Houston. 

It’s a call center launched to make government services more user-friendly and responsive to citizens, using one telephone number to call for information on services and to report non-emergency concerns.
