Is EaDo Houston Safe?

Is EaDo Houston Safe

East Downtown, or EaDo as it’s commonly referred to, is a vibrant neighborhood located in Houston, Texas. With its growing popularity as a destination for young professionals and families, the question of safety in EaDo is an important one.

In this article, we will explore the safety in EaDo and what residents and visitors can expect in terms of crime and safety in the neighborhood.

Is East Downtown Houston safe?

EaDo is a relatively safe neighborhood with low crime rates, a strong police presence and plenty of public services and community organizations.

This growing and vibrant community is well-equipped to handle medical emergencies with a growing number of medical services, emergency protocols, and community-based programs that support the health and well-being of its residents and visitors.

There are several factors that affect the general safety of residents and visitors in a particular place. Let’s take a look at what these factors are below:

Crime Rates

One of the key factors in determining the safety of a neighborhood is crime data.

According to recent data from the Houston Police Department, the crime rate in EaDo is lower than the national average, and the overall trend in crime has been downward in recent years.

The Houston Police Department tracks crime data in the city and provides regular updates on crime trends. According to the latest available data, the crime rate in EaDo has decreased by approximately 12% over the past year.

The table below depicts the drop in most crimes in East Downtown Houston with an average drop of 11% across all kinds of crime.

The most common crimes in EaDo are property crimes, such as theft and burglaries. In 2021, there were approximately 200 reported incidents of theft and 150 reported incidents of burglary in the neighborhood.

This represents a decrease of approximately 15% and 20%, respectively, compared to the previous year.

Police Presence

The Houston Police Department provides a range of resources and programs to help residents and visitors stay safe and to report crime and suspicious activity.

With a strong presence in EaDo, there are officers patrolling the neighborhood on a regular basis. This helps to deter crime and makes residents and visitors feel safe.

The Houston Police Department operates a non-emergency line that residents and visitors can use to report crimes or suspicious activity, and they can also file a report in person at a local police station.

Listed in the table below is the contact information for the police department in Houston, stations, and a special non-emergency line for citizens to use.

The Houston Police Department is using technology to improve safety in EaDo.

The department has implemented a real-time crime center that provides officers with access to real-time crime data and analytics, which can help officers to quickly respond to crimes in progress.

In August of 2001, the 311 Houston Service Helpline was implemented by the City of Houston.

It’s a call center launched to make government services more user-friendly and responsive to citizens, using one telephone number to call for information on services and to report non-emergency concerns.

Additionally, the department has implemented a mobile app that allows residents to report crimes and receive updates on criminal activity in their neighborhood. These apps are available for both Apple and Android devices as of this writing.

Walkability and Public Transportation

Another important factor in the safety of a neighborhood is its walkability and accessibility.

EaDo is known for its walkable streets, vibrant nightlife, and public transportation options, including the METRORail, which provides easy access to other parts of the city.

The neighborhood is also well-lit, with well-maintained sidewalks and public spaces, making it a safe and convenient place to walk, bike, or take public transportation.

EaDo has experienced a major improvement in its public infrastructure in recent years, including the development of new streets, sidewalks, and bike lanes. The city has also made investments in lighting, making the neighborhood brighter and safer at night.

Economic Conditions

Economic Conditions

The relationship between the economy and crime rates is a well-established concept. Studies have shown that when the economy is doing well, crime rates tend to decrease, and when the economy is struggling, crime rates tend to increase.

This holds true for East Downtown Houston, where a strong economy can play a significant role in enhancing public safety and reducing crime.

EaDo is a growing neighborhood, with a diverse mix of residents, businesses, and organizations that are working together to create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive community.

One of the most significant benefits of a thriving economy is job creation. When there are ample employment opportunities in a community, individuals are less likely to engage in criminal activities to earn a living.

Employment provides a stable source of income, which can help reduce poverty and financial stress, both of which are often linked to higher crime rates.

The employment rates in Eado have significantly increased and its unemployment rate is relatively low compared to other parts of Houston.

The table below from a study done by the Houston government, shows data on employment in EaDo and other major areas. EaDo’s unemployment rate is lower than the overall average for Houston and fairs better than most other areas in the city.

Labor ForceEmployedUnemployedUnemployment Rate
EaDo3,8003,5842166%
East Houston8,2386,7751,46318%

Moreover, a strong economy can lead to increased investment in a community. This can lead to improvements in infrastructure, such as better roads, public transportation, and housing.

Such investments can also help create public spaces that are safer, more inviting, and less prone to criminal activities. A well-maintained and well-lit public space can deter potential criminals, and provide residents and visitors with a sense of security.

The Greater Houston Partnership already has a plan in place in order to achieve this, spending over 800 million in dollars with 14 infrastructural project wins already under their belts and 3,500 new jobs created.

Medical Services

In addition to its growing popularity as a residential neighborhood, East Downtown is also home to a growing number of medical services, including hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies.

This makes it an important factor to consider when evaluating the safety and well-being of the neighborhood.

In the event of a medical emergency, residents and visitors in EaDo can call 911 for immediate assistance.

The Houston Fire Department and the Houston Emergency Medical Services (EMS) respond to medical emergencies in the area, providing life-saving care and transport to local hospitals.

Emergency Protocols

Emergency Protocols

In terms of emergency preparedness, EaDo is located in a region that is prone to natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, and severe thunderstorms.

As such, it’s important for residents and visitors to be prepared for emergencies and to have a plan in place in case of a natural disaster.

This can include having emergency supplies, such as food, water, and first-aid supplies, on hand, as well as having an evacuation plan in place.

Drug Use and Addiction

Unfortunately, drug use remains a significant issue in EaDo. The presence of drug dealers and drug users in the neighborhood can create an environment that is unsafe for residents and visitors.

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), drug-related crime continues to be a concern in EaDo, with approximately 50 reported drug offenses in 2021.

However, this represents a decrease of approximately 30% compared to the previous year.

To address this issue, the city has increased its focus on drug education and prevention programs, as well as increased its law enforcement efforts to reduce drug-related crime.

Mental Health Services

Mental health is another critical factor in the safety of EaDo. The neighborhood is home to several mental health clinics and community organizations that provide counseling and support services to residents.

According to a study conducted by Stanford University, mental health services can play an important role in reducing crime. When individuals with mental health issues receive the support and treatment they need, they are less likely to engage in criminal behavior.

Mental health services can also help reduce recidivism rates. Individuals with mental health conditions who have been involved in the criminal justice system are at an increased risk of reoffending.

Having access to mental health facilities is a great contributor to lessening mental health driven crimes. Listed below are some places that offer such services.
