The Houston Interactive Aquarium & Animal Preserve allows visitors to not only observe but also actively engage with the animals. It’s owned and operated by the Cobino family, renowned owners and operators of multiple aquariums nationwide.

While construction on the 5-acre zoo initially experienced some delays it eventually opened its doors on May 10, 2021.

At this aquarium, you can try activities like snorkeling with stingrays and sharks. There are also non aquatic exhibits where you can pet and feed sloths, lemurs and kangaroos!

Later on, an aviary center filled with different types of birds and a reptile house were added so that guests can enjoy interacting with more exotic animals that you won’t be able to find at a normal petting zoo.

The Houston Interactive Aquarium & Animal Preserve also has an adventure course, a well-stocked gift shop, an arcade, a lively bounce house, and a food and concessions area to fill up after a day there.

Where to Park

Parking for the Houston Interactive Aquarium and Animal Preserve is included in the admission fee. But, the parking lot at the aquarium is relatively small and tends to be full an hour after opening.

The good news is that there’s an allotted lot available, located just before you reach the aquarium on the other side of the street. It’s a little nondescript so ask around to find it!

There is a $5 fee for parking in the overflow lot, but the interactive aquarium provides a golf cart shuttle service that can transport visitors from the overflow lot to the main entrance of the aquarium.

But, if you prefer to walk, it’s a five-minute stroll from the overflow lot to the aquarium entrance.

Best Time to Go

If you don’t like bumping elbows with crowds, the best time to go is on a weekday when school is in session or on weekends after 3:00 PM.

Most people get there early in the morning or during summers and school holidays, so it’s best to avoid these times if you can.

How to Keep Cool and Comfortable

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty or snagged and bring sunscreen!

The park has mist machines scattered around the location in the outdoor areas that help cool you down. There are also loads of shaded areas you can rest under when the heat gets especially unbearable.
