All about the Woodlands Waterway 

The Woodlands Waterway is a 1.8-mile-long park and transportation corridor that runs through the heart of The Woodlands. It’s a great place to hang out, stroll around, and take in the scenery.

The Waterway’s eco-friendly design is also something to appreciate. The plants lining the path are native to the area, and they keep the water clean through some cool sustainable practices, like using floating wetlands to filter pollutants.

The Woodlands Waterway has a rich history that dates back to the 1970s when The Woodlands community was first established. 

The development of the Waterway was a part of a larger master plan for the community that included creating a downtown area with walkways, green spaces, and transportation options.

In 1985, the Town Center Improvement District was created to fund the construction of the Waterway, among other improvements. 

The Waterway was designed by Robert A. M. Stern Architects, who created a beautiful, pedestrian-friendly path along the water’s edge, complete with fountains and public art.

The construction of the Waterway began in 1999 and took several years to complete. 

The project involved the creation of a man-made waterway that runs through the heart of The Woodlands, connecting different parts of the community. 

The waterway was designed to be both functional and beautiful, providing a transportation corridor for boats and pedestrians alike.

In 2004, the first phase of the Waterway opened to the public, featuring a beautiful promenade with shops, restaurants, and hotels lining the path. 

Over the years, the Waterway has continued to evolve, with the addition of public art installations, green spaces, and even a floating stage for concerts and performances.

Today, the Woodlands Waterway is a vibrant and essential part of The Woodlands community, providing a beautiful and functional space for residents and visitors alike to enjoy.

How to Go to The Woodlands Waterway

Getting to the Woodlands Waterway is easy and convenient, no matter how you prefer to travel. You’ll find plenty of options for getting to this beautiful and vibrant part of The Woodlands community from the Woodlands Mall. 

• By Car:

The Woodlands Waterway is located just a few miles west of The Woodlands Mall, and can be accessed by taking Lake Robbins Drive westbound until you reach Waterway Avenue. 

Turn right onto Waterway Avenue and follow it until you reach the Waterway Square parking garage, which offers plenty of parking for visitors.

• By Bike:

If you prefer to ride your bike, start by exiting The Woodlands Mall onto Lake Robbins Drive and heading west. Take a right onto Six Pines Drive, then left onto Waterway Avenue. 

Follow the bike lane along Waterway Avenue until you reach the Waterway Square parking garage, where you can park your bike and explore the Waterway on foot.

• By Public Transportation:

The Woodlands Mall is conveniently located near several bus stops served by the Harris County Metropolitan Transit Authority (METRO). From the mall, take the Route 50 bus westbound until you reach the Town Center Transfer Point. 

From there, transfer to the Route 60 bus, which will take you directly to the Waterway Square parking garage.

Pro Tip: 

Validate your parking voucher in any participating restaurant, shopping center, or establishment along the waterway to get parking for free.

Hughes Landing is a hub for entertainment with a variety of free concerts, festivals, and other exciting events available for all. Rock the Row, a concert series held in spring, summer, and fall, is just one example of the ongoing entertainment opportunities.

Hughes Landing is also a great place for art enthusiasts, as there are numerous public art installations on display, including Wind Waves by Yvonne Domenge, Fenris Glacier by Julie Speidel, and the Hughes Landing Band Shell.

Fogo De Chão Brazilian Steakhouse is a picturesque venue overlooking Lake Woodlands. 

For those looking for a great deal, Bar Fogo has limited Happy Hour drink specials available all day, every day. From Monday to Friday between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m., discounted bar bites and small plates are also available in the patio or bar area only.

The more tokens you buy, the better the discount, with one token costing $2, three tokens for $5, and eight tokens for $10, and only one token required per ride.

The Fountains at Waterway Square provide a spectacular display of synchronized choreography with music, and are programmed to play multiple family-friendly musical selections every 15 minutes, seven days a week. 

The water wall is an impressive 120 feet long and features 24 stone levels cascading down a nearly-vertical 10-foot wall to the lower pond, with seven terraced levels on each end. 

With 20 speakers located in six locations and 4,250 watts of power supplied by five amplifiers, the fountain provides an immersive surround sound experience. 

Our favorite part? The water wall and fountain resemble an eighth note when viewed from the surrounding buildings or from the air, adding to the charm of this unique attraction.

Waterway Square also hosts many restaurants and bars that are the perfect spots for Happy Hour, offering not just great food and drinks but also spacious patios with amazing views. Here are some of the places we love to chow down in.

Churrascos blends upscale ambiance with mouth-watering steaks, seafood, and South American cuisine that caters to both an intimate date or a large gathering. 

The menu features Filete en Salsa Jalapeña, plantain-crusted shrimp, and Pollo Azteca.  You must also indulge in their desserts, such as Oaxacan cheese cake and coconut ice cream, which pair perfectly with their vintage ports and tequilas. 

If you’re looking for some grub with a view or a show, the Goose’s Acre Bistro & Irish Pub in The Woodlands is the perfect place for you.

You can relax with scotch flights and Irish empanadas while admiring the waterfront view. It’s the perfect spot to wind down after a conference or catch up with friends. 

The pub also offers live music performances, chef dinners, bingo, and even a Monday running club.

For all of you fine-dining buffs out there, this place is a must-visit! TRIS on Waterway Square offers creatively plated dishes featuring worldly flavors prepared by Executive Chef Austin Simmons.

At Waterway Square, there are numerous public art installations to explore, each with its own unique charm. 

One of the standout pieces is Why Sit When You Can Play, one of the 24 art benches located throughout The Woodlands. 

But that’s not all – kids will delight in the treasure hunt waiting for them at Grandma’s Purse, an expansive sculpture crafted from terrazzo and bronze cast in glass. 

As they search for hidden objects embedded in the terrazzo, such as scissors, sunglasses, crayons, and toy cars, they’ll be transported to a world of wonder.

It even has a children’s literary labyrinth that features life-sized Aesop’s Fables characters.

Augusta Pines, an 18-hole semi-private golf club includes a state-of-the-art practice facility equipped with six target greens and sand bunkers. Four different sets of tees cater to varying levels of expertise.

The Woodlands Waterway is home to some of the most exciting places that feature everything from boating to rappelling in the great outdoors. If you get sick of he parties, drinks, and lights, head down to one of these hot spots for a day in the sun! 

Lake Woodlands

With a surface area of 200 acres, Lake Woodlands is surrounded by lush greenery and offers a variety of recreational activities for visitors of all ages. 

There are several trails that surround the lake, making it a great place to walk or jog. There are picnic areas as well, making it a great spot for a family outing or a romantic picnic with your significant other.

The lake is home to a variety of fish species which anglers will love, including catfish, bass, and crappie. Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy a peaceful day on the lake while trying their luck at catching fish.

The lake is suitable for a variety of boats, including canoes, kayaks, paddleboats, and motorboats. You can bring your own boat or rent one from the Lake’s Edge Boat House.

The boat house offers a variety of rental options, including single and tandem kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and even pedal boats for those who prefer a more leisurely experience. There are also water bikes available for rent. 

The rental prices are reasonable, and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, ensuring that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time on the water.

While walk-up rentals are available at Lakes Edge, it’s advisable to make reservations in advance to guarantee availability. Rentals are charged hourly, and there is an additional fee of $5 for the second hour of rental. 

Paddle Away at the Riva Row Boat House

If you’re in the mood for some fun in the sun and a chance to get up close and personal with nature, Riva Row Boat House is the place to be! 

They’ve got all sorts of water recreation rentals for you to choose from, whether you’re flying solo or rolling with a crew. And the best part? 

It’s conveniently located near Market Street and The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel & Convention Center, so you don’t have to go far to have a good time.

 Plus, if you’re feeling extra lazy, there’s a trolley stop nearby. 

You can bring your dog along on kayaking trips at Riva Row Boat House without any additional fees.

However, the availability of life jackets for dogs is limited, and they are not allowed on paddle boards or swan boats. You don’t need to pay a deposit, but a valid photo ID will be held as a deposit during the rental.

Texas TreeVentures is an exciting outdoor aerial adventure course where you can push your limits and climb to new heights! 

Nestled among the trees, this one-of-a-kind course presents a mental and physical challenge for individuals, families, friends, and groups as they navigate through a variety of poles, cables, and other elements for up to three hours. 

The course is conveniently located on the grounds of The Recreation Center at Rob Fleming Park and is situated next to the stunning 1,800-acre George Mitchell Nature Preserve. 

The course is created to provide a “challenge by choice” experience. Each participant is allotted a three-hour reservation to enjoy the course at their own pace and level of comfort.

The Waterway Trolley

The Woodlands Town Center Trolley offers convenient transportation along a 4.1-mile route that links major attractions, including The Woodlands Mall, Market Street, The Woodlands Waterway, and Hughes Landing. 

This complimentary service is designed to provide visitors with effortless access to a variety of retail, entertainment, dining, and lodging options. 

To minimize wait times, the trolley system operates multiple trolleys simultaneously, with an average wait time of around 10 minutes.

Trolleys operate in the Town Center area of The Woodlands seven days a week.

• Monday – Thursday: 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 4 to 9 p.m. 
• Friday – Saturday: 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 5 to 10 p.m. 
• Sunday: 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. 

Note: There will be no service on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, or New Year’s Day.
