Whether you’re a nature lover, a foodie, or just looking for a good time, Texas City offers a variety of experiences that will make your visit unforgettable. Let me share some of my favorite finds with you!

Visit the Texas City Memorial Park

The Texas City Memorial Park is a poignant tribute to those lost in a tragic accident years ago. The park features beautiful statues, informative plaques, and a serene fountain, all thoughtfully arranged to guide visitors from one exhibit to the next. 

While the memorial reflects a somber history, it’s impressively done and has been expanded with additional memorials over time.

Getting there from Houston is straightforward: just take Interstate 45 South to FM 1764, which leads you right through Texas City. Make a left at 29th Street to reach the park. 

Pro tip:
If you’re bringing your dog along, they’re welcome but need to stay on a leash.

Explore the Texas City Museum

About 45 minutes south of Houston, the Texas City Museum offers a fascinating dive into the city’s past. The layout is well-organized, guiding you through key moments in local history. 

A standout feature is the floor dedicated to impressive railroad miniatures, and you can even browse through yearbooks dating back to 1920.

The museum also showcases historical items from Galveston, including artifacts from the devastating ship explosion that destroyed the harbor. 

Despite its size, the museum packs a punch, offering both emotional and intellectual engagement with exhibits like the 1947 Texas City Disaster films, photographs, and artifacts.

Pro tip:
Plan to spend around two hours if you want to fully immerse yourself in the exhibits, films, and detailed artifacts.

Have Fun Under the Sun at Lagoonfest Texas

Lagoonfest Texas is a fantastic spot for a family day out, offering a beach experience right on land. The enormous, pristine pool provides a perfect blend of beach and pool vibes, complete with sand, lounge chairs, and umbrellas.

You’ll enjoy free rides on the massive slide, while the obstacle course costs an additional $5. There are also options to rent kayaks and other water sports gear. Food prices are on par with other family entertainment venues, so you won’t be surprised by the costs.

The park features a lively atmosphere with a DJ, games for kids, balloon artists, and face painters.

Pro tip:
If you’re looking to secure a free umbrella spot, be sure to arrive early, or opt for a cabana if you’re willing to spend $300 or more.

Go Birdwatching at Texas City Prairie Preserve

Located on the southwest shore of the bay, the 2,303-acre Texas City Prairie Preserve is a fantastic spot to experience nature. 

The 2,314-acre Texas City Prairie Preserve is a vital demonstration site for native prairie restoration. It showcases a variety of native plants, including big and little bluestem, gulf cordgrass, and the rare coastal gayfeather. 

This area has been carefully restored to support native plants and serves as an important habitat for a variety of birds. You’ll see everything from white ibis and white-tailed hawks to brown pelicans, American oystercatchers, and other shore and wading birds.

Pro tip:
You can register to be a Nature Conservancy volunteer! Volunteer work days offer a variety of opportunities, including removing invasive species, harvesting native seeds, planting marsh grasses, and tending to the butterfly garden.

Embark on an Escape Room Adventure at Terror Isle Adventures

Each of the three rooms—Mystic Voyage, Nefarious Offering, and Dungeon of the Drowned—builds on the previous one, creating a continuous narrative. 

The lighting, relics, and clues enhance the experience, keeping us engaged and excited as we solve puzzles and anticipate what would come next. It’s the perfect balance of suspense and fun, with a compelling story and a twist that will leave you amazed.

The meticulous detail in every aspect of the building shows the effort put into creating this immersive experience. 

Pro tip:
We highly recommend going on Halloween when they open their haunted house section for an extra thrill.

Stroll along Downtown 6th Street

Texas City’s 6th Street corridor is the heart of the city, bustling with charming local shops and restaurants. It’s the perfect place to explore eclectic retailers and savor delicious local cuisine. 

The area is also known for its vibrant events, including weekly concerts, food truck nights, and annual parades and festivals, making it a lively spot for both residents and visitors.

6th Street events have also become a must-visit for people from Galveston County and the Greater Houston Area. These events include the 1947 Disaster Reunion, 4th of July Celebration, Christmas Parade, and the Lone Star Deluxe Car Show, among others.

Pro tip:
It’s a good idea to come here at night, as the street comes alive with twinkling lights and live music, creating a festive atmosphere!

The 2024 Texas City Art Festival kicks off with an opening night on Saturday, March 23, at the Doyle Convention Center from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. 

The Art Show will be open to the public starting Sunday, March 24, from 1pm to 4pm, and then Monday through Wednesday, March 25-27, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The event features a variety of workshops, including Upcycling 3D Collage, Neurographic Painting, and Watercolor and Ink Birds. 

Pro tip:
Workshops are free, but space is limited, so pre-registration is required so make sure to do that before attending the festival!

Tanger Outlets Houston is a charming outdoor shopping area with a wide variety of stores. This clean and well-maintained outlet mall features a mix of outlet and regular stores, offering a great shopping experience. 

The newly renovated food court provides several dining options.You’ll find a diverse range of products, including clothing, jewelry, shoes, and hats for everyone, as well as vendors selling soaps, kitchenware, toys, and other goods. 

If you get hungry, there are plenty of snack vendors and vending machines. For families, there are outdoor playgrounds to keep the kids entertained. Conveniently located across from SpringHill Suites and near Buc-ee’s.

Don’t forget to inquire about discounts and military discounts, as many stores offer them!

Check Out Bay Street Park

Bay Street Park, located on Bay Street, offers a fantastic view of the Houston Ship Channel and the Texas City Dike. This expansive park features backstops, fishing piers, soccer fields, a sand volleyball court, walking trails, covered shelters, and both portable and permanent restrooms.

The park honors veterans with large plaques and includes several clean, modern playgrounds. Scattered benches and tables, shaded areas, and abundant wildlife make it a great place to relax. 

On the north side, there are great spots for feeding ducks and turtles from a wooden bridge. The park also boasts a nature trail, butterfly gardens, disc golf course, workout area, and large basketball courts. 

The historical planes provide a striking backdrop for photos, and the open fields and soccer fields are perfect for practice. Bay Street Park also features a lighthouse and fishing areas along Skyline Drive. 

Pro tip:
The park hosts fireworks shows on certain holidays, live bands, and other family-friendly activities, making it a vibrant community hub.

Unwind at the Texas City Dike

The Texas City Dike has a $10 entrance fee, but it’s worth it for the amenities and activities available. It offers plenty of piers for walking and fishing, boat ramps for loading and unloading your water toys, and ample shell beds to explore.

While it’s not ideal for swimming due to limited safe ocean entries, it’s a fantastic spot for fishing and relaxing, making it highly recommended for family activities. 

On the right side of the dike, you can fish, while the left side offers areas for swimming, picnicking under shelters, and additional fishing spots. The park provides portable toilets along the beach and plenty of trash cans on both sides. 

Ice cream trucks frequently drive up and down the dike, adding to the fun. Rainbow Park, located at the entrance to the dike, and a couple of bait and tackle shops for last-minute supplies are also available.

This long road offers great opportunities for sunbathing, fishing, picnicking, and swimming while managing water flow into Galveston Bay. The dike provides stunning views of the water and sun. 

Pro tip:
For the best experience, arrive by 7 am to secure a good parking spot and set up your area, as the dike gets crowded by 10 am.
