The 7 Best Dance Studios in Houston

The 5 Best Dance Studios in Houston

Our Criteria

Experienced Teachers: We considered dance teachers that provided an enjoyable experience for all who took their classes. The dance studios we chose to consider have passionate and kind teachers with a unique dance history allowing them to teach various students.
Dance Styles: Dance studios should provide a well-rounded dance education. We observed dance studios that offer a variety of dance styles, such as jazz, hip-hop ballet, contemporary, etc., for students to enjoy their lessons.
Environment: The environment of a studio makes a difference in a student's experience. Therefore, we considered the administrative staff, cleanliness, the energy of the teachers, and the professionalism maintained at different dance studios.
Specialized Dance Floors: We avoided choosing dance studios with concrete flooring because this can lead to more injuries in the ankles and knees. Therefore we selected dance studios that provide a cushioned dance floor that eases the stress on the bones and joints in the case of shock jumping, providing a non-slip dancing surface for all students.

Pros

  • Scholarships available
  • Well-maintained dance floors
  • Intensive training and education
  • Renowned instructors

Cons

  • Limited class availability

The Institute of Contemporary Dance in Houston strives to provide all their student dancers with professional opportunities, training, and the education they need to succeed in a full-time career as a dancer. At least that's what we've heard.

Former Institute of Contemporary Dance in Houston students relayed to us that various famous artists teach the classes and activities.

Based on what our clients saw during their sample lesson at the Institute of Contemporary Dance in Houston, it was evident that the instructors wish the best for their students and provide intensive training.

One thing to note is that the Institute of Contemporary Dance in Houston provides scholarships to student dancers. Not all who apply, though, are chosen.

Although they offer free perks when signing up for their membership and class packages, our client opted for the $15 individual open jazz technique class. They did note that spots were limited in their courses, so we recommend signing up early.

Not a single dancer slipped across the floor, even though it had been polished clean moments before the class started. Our client appreciated the safety aspects the Institute considered.

One of the things that impressed our client during the dance lesson was the various dance snippets and videos the instructor would share throughout the class.

These videos demonstrated examples of other people who had previously struggled with the same dance movements. Moreover, there was a level of professionalism between the students and the dance instructors.

Besides this, the instructors' strong leadership skills shined through at every moment of the class. Indeed, they proved through their instruction that their priority is to give every student the same opportunity in the dancing world.

Pros

  • $20 trial lesson for newcomers
  • Student-focused
  • Friendly teachers
  • Customized learning program

Cons

  • Limited dance styles offered

Just Danze Dance Studio boasts that they break the mold of what dance studios are expected to be, priding themselves on being diverse, student-focused, and non-intimidating.

Students we talked to backed up the claims of Just Danze Dance Studio when commenting that they never felt intimidated to learn new passions in the field of dance with the lessons Just Danze Dance Studio offers.

By means of a sample $20 one on one private dance lesson at Just Danze Dance Studio, we observed the instructor's devotion to dance while introducing to us the diverse arts of dance. (Do note the $20 trial lesson is for new students only.)

Trish Shaw, the owner, was our instructor for the sample class—she truly knows her dance moves.

Now, we always felt like we had two left feet; that was until Trish utilized her customized learning program. She was able to help us find rhythm in the Latin dance two-steps that we did by providing structured discipline—all at our own pace.

Moreover, we liked how she didn't criticize our missteps. Instead, Trish reminded us that every misstep was an opportunity to improve in our growth as a dancer.

Her friendly mannerisms and articulate instructions left an impression on us. Her teaching contained a sense of artistry, bringing to life the art of dancing.

Pros

  • Mommy and Me classes
  • Passionate teachers

Cons

  • Classes start at $53+

Move Nation Dance Academy provides its students with the skills they need for a successful dance career. Well, that's what former students of Move Nation Dance Academy told us.

Many students we spoke to raved about the focus and passion the teachers at Move Nation Dance Academy demonstrate.

Others told us they appreciated how the instructors hope to encourage safe techniques that allow students to build a passion for dancing.

Our client witnessed these claims to be true during their sample Mommy and Me dance class at Move Nation Dance Academy.

For starters, the rates at Move Nation Dance Academy start at $53 for thirty minute classes going up to $80 for an hour long class. Thankfully, there are trial classes available though for $15–which is what our client decided on.

What stood out to our client the most though about Move Nation Dance Academy was their viewpoint that no child is too young to instill a passion for dancing is seen throughout their class instruction.

Even those below toddler age were allowed to build a solid dance foundation and grow in their love for dance. Yes, some mothers brought children who were barely one year old.

In the Mommy and Me ballet class, the mothers and their children had big smiles throughout the course, soaking up the fun learning environment Move Nation Dance Academy creates for beginner toddler dancers.

Furthermore, our client noted how easy-going and down-to-earth the instructors were when handling toddlers—demonstrating immense patience and that no student is too young to begin their dance career.

Pros

  • Kid-friendly classes
  • Good training classes

Cons

  • No class introduction
  • Lack of direction at the start of class

Soreal Dance Studio has earned a reputation among its students for helping them become more confident and liberated dancers.

Furthermore, parents have commented that the classes are kid-friendly and good training for their future as dancers.

Although, some mentioned to us at the beginning of the classes at Soreal Dance Studio that there's hardly any direction for newcomers.

The lack of direction confused some newcomers since they had no clue who their instructor was until 15 minutes into the class.

As we observed a hip-hop class at Soreal Dance Studio, we realized this to be true. Improvement in welcoming the class would be helpful because we ourselves had no clue who the instructor was until midway through the class.

Regardless, the instructor teaching the class was pleasant and eventually addressed all of the students in the room.

Moreover, we liked how the instructor encouraged all students in the class to engage with every step and become more in-tune with their bodies when dancing across the dancefloor.

For the entire 1 hour and 30-minute class session, the passion and patience were evident in how the instructor spoke to all in class and his teaching methods.

He brought hip-hop to life, making it fun, and helped the class as a whole to demonstrate confidence.

While the instructor was down to earth, we noted he didn't hold back from letting his students know which moves they did incorrectly or if their body movements were too stiff.

Indeed, the instructors at Soreal Dance Studio train their students to reach their highest ability as dancers.

Pros

  • Gym and sauna available for use
  • One-on-one private lessons
  • Pomeranian mascot

Cons

  • No refunds
  • No class rescheduling
  • Register in advance for classes

Inner Me Studios provides fitness and dance classes for all, bringing the fun out of fitness. They claim to create a friendly, non-judgemental environment to help their students be confident in themselves as dancers.

Some students we spoke to told us that the instructors at Inner Me Studios become like family to them. Others commented about how they felt safe and comfortable during their classes.

After participating in a sample class, we can verify these remarks to be true.

Before taking the class, we had to register online, which was fairly easy. We did note that there are no refunds or rescheduling the class.

Our experience at Inner Me Studios was well worth our time. Everyone at the front desk was very accommodating from the moment we stepped into the studio, and it was spotless and upscale.

Before the class, we were even given a tour of the studio, where the staff informed us that there were fitness mats and cycling shoes available to rent for gym use. They even have a sauna as well.

During the pole dancing class, we noted how the instructors, Lindsey and Briona, adjusted to the level and the needs of their students throughout the entire lesson.

They also ensured each student felt comfortable and understood the different pole dancing moves.

Not only are the instructors motivating, but they are both fun and help everyone get in an excellent workout. By the way, private lessons are also available if you would feel more comfortable with one on one instruction.

Besides this, the most memorable part of our experience at Inner Me Studios was the welcoming little mascot dog in the lobby area—a little Pomeranian made taking the dance class all the more worthwhile.

Pros

  • Multi-functional dance organization
  • Many years of experience
  • Offers classes to students of all ages

Cons

  • Closed on Fridays and Sundays

The Houston Metropolitan Dance Center is a multi-functional dance organization that is skilled at instilling passion and excitement for dance in each one of their students.

For 25 years, they've been training the talented youth of the area, inspiring them, and enriching the community through the instruction and performance of dance.

What we like about this studio is how they offer classes to students of all ages. They have children, youth, teen and adult classes to allow everyone to enjoy the artistic and physical benefits of dance.

Regardless of one's age or experience level, anyone can try a vast range of genres and modalities they offer.

We think that all their classes are instructed well and everyone who tries will surely enjoy. The instructors take the time to help out each student so it's really worth it.

We find the prices of their classes reasonable as well. We highly recommend!

The only thing about them is they're closed on Fridays and Sundays, so this may be a con for those who are generally free on these days.
