Sugar Rush: Exploring the Top Desserts in Houston

Exploring the Top Desserts in Houston

How We Picked:

Quality of Ingredients: As dessert lovers, we want to indulge in treats made with high-quality ingredients. When choosing a dessert spot, we looked for places that used fresh, locally sourced ingredients and avoided artificial flavors or preservatives.

We also liked spots that offered options for dietary restrictions, such as gluten-free or vegan desserts.
Creativity in Presentation: We eat with our eyes first, so we looked for dessert spots that get creative with their presentation. From unique flavor combinations to stunning plating techniques, we loved when a dessert spot gave us an experience beyond just the taste of the treat.
Variety of Options: As much as we love our go-to dessert, we also enjoy exploring new flavors and trying different treats. Hence we considered dessert places that had various options.
Atmosphere and Ambiance: While the quality of the dessert is necessary, the ambiance of the spot can also enhance the overall experience. We aimed to choose dessert spots that had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with comfortable seating and friendly staff.

Pros

  • Refreshing watermelon cucumber popsicle
  • Sweet hibiscus raspberry popsicle
  • Accommodating staff
  • Cool gaming section

Cons

  • Limited parking

On our recent trip to Popfancy, we liked that the vibes were on point as soon as we walked in. We were absorbed in the fun and energetic atmosphere of the gaming section and the cozy decor throughout the space.

The staff welcomed us with warm smiles and made us feel instantly at home.

We also liked that the staff was incredibly accommodating and happy to answer questions and make recommendations to us.

As customers who love popsicles, we were eager to try their unique assortment of frozen delights. So, that’s exactly what we did!

The non-dairy pina colada popsicle was creamy and delicious, with just the right flavor combination. We also sampled the hibiscus raspberry popsicle, the perfect blend of sweetness and tartness.

The watermelon cucumber popsicle was light and refreshing, with a subtle cucumber twist that was a pleasant surprise. Finally, we tried the Thai tea popsicle, which was bold and flavorful, with a strong flavor profile that we loved.

All of the popsicles we tried were incredibly delicious, and we quickly understood why Popfancy has become such a beloved spot. The flavors were unique, and the presentation was beautiful.

Although we enjoyed our visit to Popfancy, we did notice one thing that could be improved: parking. Finding a spot near the restaurant was difficult and limited, which could make visiting Popfancy more challenging.

This is definitely an area where they could improve, as it could affect customer experiences. As popsicle lovers, we highly recommend Popfancy Dessert Bar.

The delicious desserts, inviting atmosphere, friendly staff, and unique flavors make it a must-try destination. We can’t wait to go back and try even more of their delicious offerings.

Pros

  • Crispy oatmeal chocolate walnut cookie
  • Oozy caramel cookie
  • Chewy cranberry cookie

Cons

  • Raw in the middle
  • Overwhelmingly sweet cookies and cream

Milk Mustache is the place to go for those who love cookies. At least, that’s what we’ve heard!

So as certified cookie lovers, we had to go see what all the hype was about! With its warm and inviting atmosphere, sweet smells, and delicious assortment of cookies, it’s not surprising that this has become a favorite among fans of sweets.

Our cookie odyssey began with the oatmeal chocolate walnut cookie, a flavorful combination of crispy edges and deliciously sweet. We liked how they didn’t skimp on the chocolate chips or the walnuts!

We also thought the oatmeal provided a hearty undertone. At the same time, the chocolate and walnuts offered a sweet contrast that added depth.

Next, we tried the sea salt caramel pecan cookie. From our first bite into these, the caramel oozed out onto our fingers—it’s quite messy but delicious nonetheless.

We really liked the added touch from the sprinkled sea salt on top, as it gave the cookie just a pinch of savoriness.

We followed that up with a pair of crazy cranberry cookies, which surprised us with their tartness. The cranberries balanced the slightly sweet cookie, creating a unique flavor profile.

The chewy texture and retained shape after baking made this cookie a hit.

Our cookie tour concluded with their cookies and cream cookie.

As much as we wanted to love this cookie, we thought it was overwhelmingly sweet with milk chocolate, white chocolate, and chunks of Oreos.

Besides this, we also noted that some of the other cookies we ordered seemed raw in the middle, detracting from the overall experience. However, for those willing to overlook these minor imperfections, Milk Mustache is worth a visit.

Pros

  • Fluffy dutch baby pancakes
  • Rich and creamy café sua da ice cream
  • Strong rum spiked cold brew

Cons

  • Small portions
  • Lack of prompt service

As dessert lovers, we recently visited Squable, a modern dessert café that combines European ambience with delectable desserts. Upon entering the café, we were immediately greeted with a warm and inviting atmosphere thanks to the modern minimalism and European chic design.

The soft instrumental music filled the air, and the walls were adorned with colorful prints and artwork. The ambiance of the café was excellent, and the staff was friendly and helpful.

Our meal began with the dutch baby pancake, served with bacon and maple butter. The presentation was stunning, with the pancake served in a cast-iron skillet, and the bacon and maple butter arranged around the edges.

The pancake itself was light and fluffy, and the bacon was cooked to perfection. The combination of salty and sweet flavors was delightful, and the maple butter added a wonderfully rich flavor to the dish.

Next, we enjoyed the café liégeois, a rich and creamy coffee-flavored custard topped with a layer of whipped cream and a dusting of cocoa powder. The café’s homemade custard was silky smooth and had a delightfully creamy texture.

The coffee flavor was robust, and the cream provided a light sweetness. We also tried the café sua da ice cream, a Vietnamese-inspired blend of cold-brew coffee, sweetened condensed milk, and coconut milk.

The ice cream had a rich, creamy texture, and the surprisingly intense coffee flavor was a welcome surprise.

Finally, we enjoyed a spiked cold brew, made with cold-brew coffee and a shot of spiced rum. The drink was perfectly balanced, with each flavor complementing the other perfectly.

However, we did experience minor issues such as the small portions for the price and a lack of prompt service. That being said, Squable is definitely worth a visit for anyone looking for an indulgent dessert experience.

Pros

  • Delicious chocolate rum cake
  • Fluffy ricotta cake

Cons

  • Long wait times
  • Overpriced menu

Coltivare has garnered a reputation as a go-to spot for dessert lovers that we know, and it was easy to see why.

Upon arrival in the late afternoon, we were warmly greeted by the friendly staff and presented with the menu. Having been here before for their Italian cuisine, we skipped the entrees and went just for dessert.

Just reading the mouth-watering descriptions, our sweet tooth was already tingling. The chocolate rum cake was our first order of the day, and we were excited to dig into it.

The cake had a beautiful golden brown color, and the slightly crumbly texture made it a dream to eat. We liked that the rum flavor of the cake was perfectly balanced by the light and creamy pistachio buttercream, making it a masterpiece for our taste buds.

Next up was the ricotta cake, which we thought was simply a work of art. The ricotta cake itself was moist and fluffy, and the addition of the carrots and beets brought a sweetness and depth of flavor that was mouth-watering.

Plus, the caramel was simply divine, with a creamy texture and a hint of nuttiness that was simply indescribable.

While Coltivare was a delight for our sweet tooth, there were a few minor downsides to our experience. We thought that the wait times and overpriced menu items could be a deterrent for some, especially during a busy time of day.

Pros

  • Rich red velvet cake
  • Delicious cookies and cream
  • Gluten free and vegan available

Cons

  • Hard to chew fondant circles
  • Stale strawberry cupcakes

We recently visited Crave Cupcakes, a local dessert spot with a wide range of cupcakes and other treats that cater to all palates. They even have some cupcakes available in gluten-free and vegan versions.

Our experience was overall positive, with the quality of the recipes and the attention to detail that went into each cupcake shining through.

First, we tried the red velvet cupcake, which had a moist and fluffy cake with a deep red color and rich chocolate flavor. We liked how the cream cheese frosting added a nice balance.

Next, we had the cookies and cream cupcake, which left us wanting more. The vanilla bean cake was a little crumbly, but we still managed to eat it in one piece.

We also thought it was great that the Oreo buttercream frosting was thick but not overly sweet. The cookie pieces in the frosting added a nice crunch, making it a satisfying treat.

Next up was the coconut cupcake, which was a bit different from the others. We weren’t major fans of the coconut and cream cheese frosting combination, as we thought the cream cheese overpowered the coconut flavor.

But the shredded coconut on top added a fun crunch to the cupcake!

Additionally, the strawberry cupcake we tried was stale, so we’d recommend making sure you ask for a fresh batch.

The other thing we took issue with was that the branded fondant circles on all of the cupcakes were difficult to chew—we ended up removing them to get the full taste of the cupcake.

Despite these minor issues, we thought Crave Cupcakes is a place worth checking out if you’re in the mood for a delicious cupcake.
