Top 5 Houston Distilleries — A Guide for Spirit Enthusiasts

Top 5 Houston Distilleries — A Guide for Spirit Enthusiasts

How We Picked:

Quality of Spirits: We prioritized distilleries that created exceptional spirits as the quality is important. When we evaluated a spirit, we considered how it was fermented, what kind of yeast was used, what ingredients were chosen, and how long it was aged.
Originality: While we love traditional spirits like bourbon and scotch, we were also looking for distilleries that got creative with their flavors and ingredients. At distilleries with creative twists on classics, we noted that it demonstrated their imaginative thinking and readiness to explore new possibilities.
Service and Hospitality: We also took into account the level of service and hospitality offered by the distilleries. We believe that a warm and professional welcome is an important aspect of the overall experience for visitors.

This meant we looked for knowledgeable, attentive staff who provided comfortable tasting rooms and created a welcoming atmosphere.
Brand Identity: A good distillery should also have a clear and distinctive brand identity that showcases the excellence and distinctiveness of its products. This involves things such as branding, marketing, and the backstory and history of the distillery.

Hence, we searched for distilleries that have created a unique and attractive brand identity that distinguishes them from their competitors.

Pros

  • Interesting distillery tour
  • Rich and intricate Chandelier Rum
  • Caffeinated Shine n Grind Rum

Cons

  • Limited to just rum

Clutch Distilling is a hidden gem that every rum enthusiast should not miss. At least, that’s what we’ve heard!

Upon visiting the distillery, we could immediately sense the passion and dedication the distillers at Clutch Distilling put into their craft.

Firstly, the ambiance and overall vibe of the distillery were fantastic. The spacious and unique interior design gave off a rustic and industrial feel that we loved.

We also had a great time on the distillery tour and learned a lot about how they make their spirits. It was really interesting to see the distilling process up close!

Regarding spirits, they only offer rum, so if you’re not a fan of rum, you may not like it here. Despite their limited liquors, we liked all of the rums we tasted.

Their Chandelier Rum boasted a rich and intricate flavor profile, including hints of vanilla, oak, caramel, and spice. It was a little sweet, but we liked the smoky scent that added to the aroma.

Furthermore, we thought their 24 Karat Rum lives up to its name with rich and indulgent flavors. It’s got a rich and smooth flavor with hints of dark chocolate, espresso, and molasses.

The last rum we tried was their Shine n Grind Rum. While it was strong, the aftertaste was cozy, with a delightful caffeine boost from the coffee that energized us throughout the night.

Pros

  • Full-bodied smoky whiskey
  • Smooth and crisp vodka
  • Unique tasting room
  • Informative tour

Cons

  • Limited drink production

We recently took a tour of Texas Black Gold Distillery and noted that they specialize in vodka, bourbon, and whiskey.

We liked that the staff was friendly, competent, and enthusiastic about their work from the moment we arrived. Our tour began with an explanation of their distilling process, which we thought was informative and engaging.

We thought it was great that they were happy to answer any questions we had and share more about their distilling process, which we think makes their tour a great experience for both seasoned drinkers and those new to the scene.

After the tour, our tour guide then led us into the tasting room, where we sampled their bourbon, whiskey, and crafted vodka. We noted that because they have a limited product range, some customers might not find a spirit to their tastes, but everything we tried was great!

In our opinion, their vodka was smooth and crisp with a hint of sweetness, while their bourbon was rich and warm. Their whiskey had a full-bodied flavor with a slightly smoky finish.

What stood out to us the most was the attention to detail within the tasting room. Every decor aspect felt unique, from the reclaimed wood panels on the walls to the vintage distilling equipment around the room.

Pros

  • Live music
  • Handcrafted spirits and cocktails
  • Distinct Jamaican rum

Cons

  • No recommendations

Almost everyone we talked to about William Price Distilling bragged about their craft spirits and the fun atmosphere at this distillery. So, of course, we had to go for ourselves to see what all the jazz was about!

When we arrived, we noticed that while the staff welcomed us, they didn’t expand much on their distillery, let alone give recommendations on which of their craft spirits to try. Granted, some might like their hands-off approach, but we would have preferred some guidance as we glanced around their distillery.

Despite this, we thought the distillery had a chill vibe with live music and a mixed crowd of people.

We also noted that William Price Distilling uses distilled spirits to create handcrafted cocktails. We saw many customers at their tasting bar chilling and enjoying the live music and others taking a distillery tour while sipping a drink.

As far as their distilled spirits go, one that stood out to us was their Jamaican rum. This unaged rum had a distinctive flavor that gave us a thrilling sensation just from smelling it.

The scent was a mix of exotic tropical fruits and sweet vanilla. Yet it tasted fruity with hints of banana doused in butter and had a lingering taste.

Pros

  • Wide range of spirits
  • Sustainable distillery
  • Robust 100 Straight Bourbon Whisky

Cons

  • Lackluster service

One of the first things we observed about Giant Texas Distillers distillery is that they offer a wide range of spirits. They had whiskies, vodkas, and gins that we thought were skillfully made and incredibly smooth.

Furthermore, the vibe at Giant Texas Distillers was amazing! We thought it was great they put effort into making the atmosphere distillery a warm and inviting place for customers to come and enjoy their products.

However, we did note that, at times, the staff didn’t seem interested in helping us when we had questions about their spirits.

Despite the lackluster service, we really liked that the distillery is dedicated to sustainability and uses a solar-powered still to make their tasty spirits.

As far as their spirits go, we loved the smooth and mellow taste of their Giant Texas Brandy. It had a rich and sweet flavor with hints of caramel and vanilla.

We noted the pleasant warmth of the brandy’s finish, which lingered in our mouths and was quite enjoyable.

As whisky enthusiasts, we also fancied the bold and robust flavor of their 100 Straight Bourbon Whisky. When we smelled it, we noticed a mix of spicy scents that were quite intricate.

From what we picked up on, some subtle sweet notes of honey and vanilla added to the overall fragrance. We relished the velvety finish that left a subtle hint of toasted oak and spices in our mouths.

Pros

  • Cocktail bar on premise
  • Award-winning whiskey
  • Friendly staff

Cons

  • Canceled tour

We talked to some people who know their whiskey, and they all had great things to say about Yellow Rose Distilling. From what we’ve heard, they have a fantastic selection of top-notch whiskeys, and the atmosphere is friendly and inviting.

We also got a lot of positive feedback about the friendly and well-informed staff and the cocktail bar on the premises.

When we checked out Yellow Rose Distilling for ourselves, we must say that they are making waves in the world of spirits with their high-quality, small batches of whiskey.

As soon as we stepped inside, the delightful scent of aged whiskey filled our noses, and the gentle hum of the stills surrounded us.

We liked that the distillery had a contemporary and urban design. The tasting room was also really comfortable and welcoming.

Furthermore, we found that the staff there was super friendly and passionate about the liquor distilled at Yellow Rose Distilling.

While we were supposed to take a tour of the distillery, there was a problem with their computer system, and our tour got canceled. So instead of a tour, we tried a few samples of some of their top spirits.

We first tried their famous Outlaw Bourbon Whiskey, which we noted has won several awards. We thought it was well-balanced with notes of vanilla and caramel.

While their Double Barrel Whiskey had a rich and intricate taste, we thought their rye whiskey was a standout as it had a slightly spicy kick.
