The 5 Best Dog Training Companies in Houston

The 5 Best Dog Training Companies in Houston

How We Picked:

Certification: Dog training businesses don’t require any formal training or certification. However, the best dog trainers are those who have invested in themselves academically and/or professionally by earning relevant credentials.
So we looked for qualified dog trainers with a degree in animal behavior or a related field and companies who have earned certification from reputable animal associations.
Positive Environment: We considered dog training companies that create a positive environment for dogs and their owners due to their positive reinforcement during training.

Instead of punishing a dog for not accomplishing something, we choose companies with positive reinforcement trainers who praise dogs for their effort, as it helps enforce healthy, positive behavior in your dogs.
Excellent People Skills: We selected companies with competent trainers that have excellent people skills and can teach you and your dog, answer your questions, and address your worries.
Communication: A quality dog training company should communicate clearly and be flexible enough to adapt their teaching method to your learning rate. Hence, we chose skilled trainers that keep you apprised of progress throughout the process and even allow you to take over your dog’s training at some point.

Pros

  • Basic obedience training
  • Reward incentive system
  • Dog day care available
  • Dog grooming offered

Cons

  • Not suitable for aggressive dogs

The trainers and staff at Peace Love Dogs view training as a reward and take pride in creating an upbeat, informative environment that motivates both dogs and their owners to perform their best.

We observed the staff at Peace Love Dogs utilize their beliefs of rewards being an incentive for good dog behavior during a trial training session with one of our dogs.

We liked how after simple instructions, the trainers rewarded our dog for doing things right. More importantly, though, they kept us involved and explained to us every step of their training process.

Furthermore, we noted that many Peace Love Dog trainers took any situation and used it as a teaching moment. Such as how our dog greeted us and their behavior around new people in the room.

At the end of our trial training behavior session with our dog, we left more confident as dog owners in being able to instill in our dogs new tricks and seeing slight changes in our dog’s manner of behavior.

Although Peace Love Dogs offers basic classes, they also have specialty obedience classes for dogs high in energy and need more individual attention. We like how in these extra classes, their trainers assist you in understanding and reinforcing the best methods to help your dog understand commands when they don’t understand.

Besides dog training, Peace Love Dogs also offers doggy day care services and grooming, so busy dog owners can take note of this.

However, for those who have aggressive dogs, Peace Love Dogs wouldn’t be the best option as, from what we observed, the trainers at Peace Love Dogs excel in helping your dogs understand simple obedience commands, but not with dogs who are fearful aggressive.

Pros

  • Behavior therapy
  • Aggressive dog training
  • Private and in-house sessions

Cons

  • Expensive training

What drew many we spoke with to take their dogs to Beyond the Dog for training was how their trainers worked with their dogs until they saw a physical change in their behavior and how they followed commands.

Although working with Beyond the Dog is an investment in time and money, many who worked with their trainers claimed that the one-on-one dog training is worth the cost.

First, Beyond the Dog trainers are renowned for working with difficult and aggressive dogs with behavior issues and helping them integrate into living in peace with their owners.

We liked how at Beyond the Dog training sessions, they utilized cutting-edge obedience techniques to assist in dog training. All of their trainers are certified and educated to work with all types of dogs and handle all types of behavior issues.

Moreover, they specialize in training Pitbulls, Labradors, and dogs with fearful, aggressive, and anxious behaviors. In their training sessions, trainers create a positive and safe environment by using force-free methods to ease dog anxiety and fear based aggression.

Additionally, Beyond the Dog provides behavior therapy for various issues, such as housebreaking new dogs or severe dog aggressiveness.

We also liked the option Beyond the Dog offers to all their pet owners to have dog training sessions privately in your own home or even at your local park.

  • Off-leash training classes
  • Safe environment
  • Professional dog trainers

Cons

  • Not good for aggressive dogs

Many Houston dog parents widely regard Stephanie Bennett, the owner of Believe in Dog Training, as being patient and knowledgeable when training your lovable canines.

They specialize in puppy dog training specifically. Such as, their off-leash puppy class training is not only one of the first of its kind, but it’s innovative and effective in creating a safe environment for puppies while helping puppies develop healthy behaviors.

Although other forms of dog training are also available, like basic obedience training classes and skill training courses.

No matter what dog training you choose at Believe in Dog Training, all their training is based on positive psychology and animal science, emphasizing open dialogue, mutual regard, consistency, and practical application.

They believe using punishment, dominance, or painful instruments is counterproductive and unnecessary in training.

Furthermore, their trainers focus on motivating your dog to exercise good behavior and provide rewards such as attention, play, praise, and/or limited goodies. They also utilize splash pools, seesaws, and an obstacle course to help your dog progress in their training.

More importantly, though, the dog trainers at Believe in Dog Training demonstrate people skills and professionalism by explaining why your dog behaves a certain way so that you can understand what best to do to help your dog progress at home.

They also teach you practical techniques to help you as an owner continue to gain your dog’s trust and to help your confidence grow too.

However, if your dog demonstrates extremely aggressive behaviors, it is recommended that it will benefit more from behavior therapy instead of dog training at Believe in Dog Training.

  • Puppy training
  • Assistance dog training

Cons

  • Limited service dog positions

Many Houstonians who love their dogs to pieces raved to us about Puptown Houston’s dog training facility for its unique training methods and the vast number of services they offer. Doggy daycare, boarding, grooming, and training are just some of the services that Puptown Houston provides.

Others commented on how Puptown Houston also contributes to the community. At least, that’s what we were told.

On our tour of Puptown Houston’s Dog training, we first noted their various play areas where dogs can have fun while learning new skills—like on the obstacle course or in their swimming pool.

Furthermore, we liked how the trainers at Puptown Houston’s Dog training tailor the training to you and the breed of dog you have. Dogs can learn at their own pace and in a manner that best suits their unique personalities.

We also noted how the staff at Puptown Houston educates dog owners on the benefits of training their pets. Moreover, true to the claims, the trainers informed us their training work with service dogs gives back to the Houston community—profits from service dog education go toward multiple fundraising activities in Houston.

Although Puptown Houston specializes in training service dogs for people with physical impairments, if you require obedience training, puppy training, assistance dog training, or private sessions, they offer these services too.

However, Puptown Houston only accepts a limited number of dogs each year to train as service dogs due to the substantial time commitment involved.

Pros

  • Behavioral science method training
  • Positive reinforcement

Cons

  • No upfront training prices

Houston Dog Ranch provides a loving environment and is skilled in canine care, according to what many reputable dog owners proclaimed to us. From our observational tour of The Houston Dog Ranch, their staff members were meticulous and picky regarding their dog training methods.

First, we liked how all of their services, from boarding to training to daycare to grooming, are backed by behavioral science and designed to give your pet the best possible experience.

The trainers at Houston Dog Ranch utilize evidence-based methods to build a strong bond between you and your dog. We also liked how the trainers interact with your dog daily to gain the trust and respect necessary to guide your dog through important behavioral changes.

Additionally, as part of his or her training, your dog will receive consistent attention and play from you or your trainer. Hence putting into practice positive reinforcement and creating a safe environment for your dog.

Furthermore, we observed how the trainer addressed the concerns and questions of pet parents regarding their training, demonstrating their professionalism.

Despite these things, we noted that the staff members at The Houston Dog Ranch have some communication issues as they are not upfront about training pricing until after a consultation. This may be because the training needs and length of time vary per dog.
