Pros
- Good rates for the quality
- Lower rates for city residents
Cons
- Paid parking
- Difficult to get a tee time within a week
- Range balls are old
Memorial Park Golf Course was originally a 9-hole golf course that was used by recovering soldiers back in 1912. The course was redesigned and reopened in July 1936.
It used to be the home of the Houston Open from 1951 to 1962 and was newly renovated and reopened in 1995. At present, it’s got a 600-acre course plus a driving range, putting and chipping greens, and a clubhouse.
What we enjoyed about Memorial Park Golf Course and Driving Range is that they have really good rates for their quality.
Their courses are beautiful and well-maintained and it also helps that there have been significant renovations in the past few years.
Another huge plus is that they have much lower rates for city residents. You just have to create an account on their website and verify your residency to avail of these prices.
Their recent renovation also included more parking. However, there is a parking fee which can add up if you’re there a lot.
Also, expect that you will need to book in advance for a tee time as getting a slot on the spot or within the week is difficult.
Their golf balls are also pretty old and if you’re paying for a slot, you’d at least hope they’d provide you with decent equipment.
Overall though, Memorial Park Golf Course and Driving Range is a place you should visit if you’re looking for newly renovated facilities at lower rates.

Pros
- Pets are allowed on the cart
- Really good rates
Cons
- There is no chipping green
- Parking isn’t as protected
- Difficult to get a tee time for the morning
The Gus Wortham Park Golf Course is a 151-acre golf course located along Brays Bayou. This golf course was built in the early 1900s is just a few minutes away from downtown.
The golf course itself allows you to use all of your clubs. It’s also got an open space making it playable for both pros and newbies.
What we really like about Gus Wortham Park Golf Course is how they allow you to bring your pets in the cart. You have to pay a small fee but it’s worth it considering you get to bond with your furry friend.
They also have really good rates, especially for a course that can play as much as 6,400 yards. We also think the facilities are great, especially since they have just recently been renovated.
A downside is that they don’t have a chipping green. We all know that a chip shot is essential to a good golf game so it would’ve been nice to have a place to practice.
A bigger concern would be their parking. They don’t have the cars protected from any balls that may land on them and there have been quite a lot of complaints about this.
And lastly, their tee time scheduling is also quite a concern. If you’re looking to play anytime before 2, you might want to consider playing in the afternoon instead since morning slots fill up fast..
Overall, the facilities at Gus Wortham Park Golf Course really prove to be worth the money. If you haven’t been since they’ve renovated, make sure you check them out!

Pros
- Great fairway and greens
- There are two course options
Cons
- Challenging course
- Carts do not have GPS
- More expensive
Wildcat Golf Club has two 18-hole golf courses, namely the Lakes and the Highlands. This place is conveniently located near all downtown attractions.
Both courses have changes in elevation of up to 100 ft. They’ve also got a whole lot of awards including Top 10 Luxury Courses, Top 10 Best Service, Best Proshop, and more.
During our visit, we noticed that their fairways and greens are really well-maintained. They’ve also got really beautiful views of Houston so it definitely makes walking and playing a lot more enjoyable.
We also absolutely loved how they have two course options! The Lakes course involves a whole lot of water and so be prepared to lose a couple of balls.
The Highlands course is much better for those who prefer a panoramic view of Houston, and there’s less water, too. We think this course will definitely test your game and course management skills.
If you’re new to golf, it wouldn’t hurt to give this place a shot. Keep in mind though, that it’s considerably challenging compared to other golf courses out there.
Also, their carts don’t contain GPS so make sure to get yourself a guide or pamphlet before you head onto the course.
Lastly, take note that their rates here are more expensive than other golf courses in the area. However, we think the challenging course paired with breathtaking views is worth it.

Pros
- Free beer and burgers for direct bookings
- Unlimited balls for range practice
- Easy to get a schedule
Cons
- Course condition depends on weather
- Expensive
Houston National Golf Club opened back in November 2000. It has an 18-hole golf course along with a driving range, bunkers, car paths, and more.
During our visit, we were really pleased with how you get a free lunch when you book with them directly. Their burgers are really impeccable plus you get some beers too!
We also appreciate how you get unlimited balls for range practice. This definitely helps save on costs, in our opinion.
Compared to other clubs, it’s pretty easy to get a schedule with Houston National Golf Club. You can book a tee time with them online without the hassle of waking up early in hopes of a slot.
What we didn’t like is how the greens aren’t consistently in good condition. We don’t really recommend coming during summertime as you’d barely find patches of grass anywhere.
We’d also recommend this course when the weather isn’t so hot so you get an overall good experience. Their rates are a bit expensive though, so be prepared to shell out a bit.
Overall, we’d have to say that the easy scheduling along with the free lunch and unlimited range balls are worth your money. So if you’re in the area, try giving Houston National Golf Club a shot.

Pros
- Course is always well-maintained
- A lot of facilities
Cons
- Requires 14 days advanced tee time reservation
- Expensive
- Challenging course
Royal Oaks Country Club started in 2000 when former Masters Champion Fred Couples and Brian Curley partnered up to design the Fred Couples Signature Golf Course that’s now found in the golf club.
This course is found among the 45,000 square-foot clubhouse that also boasts of its social activities, tennis facilities, and rentable venues that are usually booked for weddings and grand parties.
We’ve observed that Royal Oaks Country Club always has well-maintained greens. During our visits, we’ve never seen any dry or empty patches of grass, which is perfect for consistent gameplay.
Royal Oaks Country Club is also notable for all the other facilities that they offer. So if you’re coming from out of town, this is also a great place to lounge around and relax.
A concern we have, however, is that you have to reserve for tee time 2 weeks in advance. This means that if you want a last-minute golf session, this place wouldn’t really be a choice.
Their rates are also a bit more expensive than other courses, which is expected given that they’re a country club with membership options.
If you’re new to golf, Royal Oaks Country Club might not also be the best option. Their courses are quite difficult but not necessarily unforgiving.
Overall, Royal Oaks Country Club is a great option for those looking for a place to play golf while enjoying its other available amenities.
