Pros
- Large slices
- Stretchy, and delicious cheese
- Authentic presentation
- Crispy crust
Cons
- Crust not salty enough
- Tomato sauce too sweet
Many people we spoke with claimed that Romano’s Pizza Italian Restaurant has authentic New York-style Pizza. A lot bragged to us about the delicious savory slices of pizza so big you may need to hold it with two hands.
But we also heard other mixed comments about Romano’s regarding flavorless pizza crusts. So to settle the claims, we checked it out for ourselves!
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the aroma of freshly baked pizza dough and the sight of a bustling kitchen. We found the staff to be friendly and attentive, and we liked how we were quickly seated at a cozy booth.
We ordered a classic Margherita pizza, a staple of any good pizzeria. We thought it was great that the pizza arrived piping hot, with a crispy crust and a generous amount of tomato sauce.
True to the claims, the pizza slices were large. At first glance, we thought it looked like authentic New York-style pizza.
We liked that the cheese was stretchy and not overpowered by the basil leaves, which we thought added a fresh, aromatic touch.
Yet, the crust lacked the chewy texture and distinct flavor characteristic of authentic New York-style pizza. We thought the crust lacked saltiness and could have benefited from a longer fermentation process to enhance its flavor profile.
Furthermore, the tomato sauce was slightly too sweet for our tastes, and it overpowered the delicate flavors of the cheese and basil. In our opinion, the pizza could have used a bit more seasoning and a touch of extra virgin olive oil to balance out the sweetness.
Don’t get us wrong – it was delicious. That’s why they still made our list despite all of our nitpicking!

Pros
- Flavorful tomato sauce
- Affordable prices
- Attentive staff
Cons
- Thick crust and not so crispy
- Not enough toppings
When we were first advised by others to try New York Grand Pizza, we were skeptical because of the mixed comments we heard. Some told us their pizzas were authentic and delicious, whereas others told us they were poor copycats of NYC pizzas.
However, after trying them out, we have to admit that the quality of the pizza and the experience overall was on point
To start, the pizza itself had large slices and a great chewy texture, just like you would expect from a New York-style pizza.
We thought their tomato sauce was flavorful and not overly sweet. Also, the cheese was melted to perfection, and added just the right amount of saltiness to the slice.
However, there were some downsides. We didn’t like how the crust was a bit too thick and lacked the crispy texture that we look for in a New York-style pizza.
Additionally, the toppings, while fresh and tasty, were a bit sparse. We wished, though, that there could have been more toppings on the slices.
One thing that really stood out to us, though, was the affordable pricing. In a city like Houston, where everything seems to be getting increasingly expensive, it was refreshing to find a place that offered quality pizza at a reasonable price.
Plus, we liked how the staff was friendly and attentive, which made the dining experience even more enjoyable.

Pros
- Thin and crispy crust
- Crispy pepperonis
- Great blend of mozzarella and provolone
Cons
- Mushrooms overpowered the cheese
- Crust edges not charred
- Not enough toppings
- Dense garlic knots
Many of our friends who are usually skeptical of non-NYC pizzerias praised Frank’s Pizza a lot. So, if it was good enough for them, we thought, why not check it out for ourselves.
From our experience, we can truthfully say that Frank’s Pizza holds its own, but it can still use some improvements when it comes to measuring up to legit NYC pizza—in our opinion, that is.
To start, we liked how the crust was thin and crispy, with a nice chewiness to it. It didn’t have the charred edges we preferred, but it was still a solid crust.
The sauce was tangy and flavorful, with just enough sweetness to balance it out. We also thought the cheese was a nice blend of mozzarella and provolone, which gave the pizza a nice depth of flavor.
As for the toppings of our pizza, we tried the pepperoni and mushroom pie, and we have to say, the pepperoni was a standout for us. It was crispy and had just the right amount of spice to it.
The mushrooms were fresh and added a nice earthiness to the pizza. However, we did find ourselves wishing for a bit more cheese to balance it out.
While the blend of mushrooms and pepperoni was tasty, we didn’t like how it didn’t cover the entire pizza, some areas of the pizza were just sauce and crust.
Another thing we weren’t a fan of was the garlic knots. We thought the garlic knots were too dense and heavy for our taste. We prefer our garlic knots to be light and airy, with just the right amount of garlic and butter.

Pros
- Perfectly wood-fired pizzas
- Intriguing spicy hot honey flavor
- Savory tomato sauce
Cons
- Greasy pizza
- Expensive
After everyone raved to us about the pizzas at Pizzaro’s Pizza Napoletana, we had to try them for ourselves to see if they were as authentic and delicious as everyone had told us. True to what we were told, the quality of their pizza was on par with authentic New York pizza.
First of all, we thought the crust was on point. It had the perfect balance of chewiness and crispiness, and you could tell it was made with high-quality ingredients.
Plus, the sauce was delicious, with just the right amount of savouriness to complement the cheese and toppings.
Speaking of toppings, we have to give a shout-out to the pepperoni. It was thick-cut and had a nice smoky flavor that elevated the pizza.
We thought the mushrooms and onions were also fresh and flavorful, although we would have liked to see more on the pizza.
One thing that we liked the most about Pizzaro’s was how they used a wood-fired oven, which gave the pizza a nice char and added to the overall flavor. The pizza was also perfectly cooked—not too crispy or floppy.
Furthermore, the hot honey we got on the side made their pizza stand out and gave it an extra kick.
However, there were a few things we didn’t love about Pizzaro’s. For one, the cheese was a bit too greasy for our liking. We also thought the prices were steep, especially considering the portion sizes.

Pros
- Crispy and chewy crust
- Tangy tomato sauce
- Inviting atmosphere
- Friendly staff
Cons
- Pepperoni not crisp enough
- Toppings not evenly distributed
We went to Home Slice Pizza as a team to sample their pizzas. Many of our team members were eager to try out their New York-style pizza and see how it was compared to the authentic pies in the Big Apple.
The first thing that struck us about Home Slice Pizza was the ambiance. We liked how the restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere that made us feel right at home.
Furthermore, the staff was friendly and attentive, making the entire experience feel comfortable and relaxed.
Now, onto the pizza itself. We ordered a couple of classic cheese slices and some pepperoni slices, both of which were perfectly cooked.
The crust was crispy and chewy, and the cheese was delicious. Plus, the sauce had just the right amount of flavor and wasn’t too acidic.
However, a few of our team members did notice a few areas where Home Slice Pizza fell short. Firstly, some of our team members thought the pepperoni could have been crispier.
They said that although the flavor of the pepperoni was spot on, the texture was a little too chewy for their liking. Others in our team thought that the toppings were not evenly distributed, with some bites being overloaded with cheese and sauce while others were lacking.
