Top 6 Tutoring Services in Houston

Top 5 Tutoring Services in Houston

Our Criteria:

Communication – When looking for tutors, it’s important to find providers that are prompt in sending learning modules and updating pupils. These tutors should also reply quickly to concerns and questions about the topics being discussed.
Class Setup – When it comes to tutoring, these companies should provide flexible class hours to their pupils. If necessary, they must also have online tutoring services.
Subject Mastery – The best tutors in Houston must have educators who are experts in the subject they’re teaching. This is to make sure that they could help people better, especially with complex topics.
Teaching Methods – We chose the providers that use multiple methods of instruction in their curriculum. These methods shouldn’t be heavily teacher-centric and also be customized based on the pupils’ learning styles.

Pros

  • Experienced and Proficient Tutors
  • Personalized Approach
  • Results-Focused

Cons

  • Lack of In-Person Interaction

Tutoring Success, based in San Francisco, has built a solid reputation as a premier online tutoring service. Established in 2000, the company prides itself on employing highly experienced and proficient tutors who are not only experts in their subjects but also personable and empathetic.

We love how all of the tutors at Tutoring Success have extensive knowledge and proficiency in their respective subjects, ensuring that students receive high-quality instruction. Their tutors are described as outgoing, friendly, empathetic, and interesting, creating a positive and engaging learning environment.

Tutoring Success recognizes that each student has a unique learning style and study habits. The services are customized to meet the individual needs and circumstances of each student, enhancing the effectiveness of the tutoring.

What’s great about the personalized attention they give is that it helps address specific learning challenges and fosters a deeper understanding of the material.

The primary goal of Tutoring Success is to help students gain academic confidence, which can lead to improved performance and a positive attitude towards learning. By focusing on empowerment, the tutors not only teach the material but also instill a sense of self-assurance and motivation in their students.

While online tutoring is convenient, it may not be suitable for all students, particularly those who benefit more from face-to-face interaction and a traditional classroom setting.

Pros

  • Excels in providing help in kids’ reading and writing
  • Integrates outdoor activities into their lessons
  • Has 4 locations in Houston

Cons

  • No online class setup
  • Unavailable during weekends

What parents love about the after-school program of IQ Viet My is the comprehensive reading and writing tutoring that they provide.

Here, the tutors first assess how adept your child is in terms of their reading and writing skills. If they are having difficulties in this area, they would start with practice sheets so the child could hone their skills.

These worksheets contain writing exercises like tracing letters and reading stories. The tutors also send online tests so that parents can help their child read and understand passages.

We think it’s splendid that the tutors also include playing with Play-Doh and Lego blocks as activities to further hone fine motor skills. This can help the child’s hands develop properly, which could improve their handwriting.

Another aspect that’s great about the company’s program is its use of playtime to teach certain concepts. For example, the educators take the pupils to the playground ane use the slides to teach them about gravity.

While their program is great, the tutoring program is purely face-to-face. Thus, if you’re not comfortable with this setup for your kids, you may need to look for some alternatives.

The company also doesn’t offer weekend-only tutoring, unlike some teaching services.

Still, it’s wonderful that IQ Viet My has 3 locations across the Houston area so you could choose a location nearer your home.

Pros

  • Provides in-house tutoring
  • Has music lessons for both kids and adults
  • Bilingual tutors

Cons

  • Expensive rates
  • Private music lessons aren’t available in some areas

Teachers 2 Go is a company that provides kids tutorials in the comforts of your home.

What we like about this offering is that the tutorial is designed in a way to complement the formal virtual classes of your child. With this, the tutors serve as the in-person teacher that provides refresher courses and homework help.

Note that even though virtual classes are safer for their children during the pandemic, it lacks the physical engagement that children need to learn. In-person tutoring could address these issues by providing easy access to instructors for academic help.

Aside from academic help, we’re amazed that the tutors also provide some music lessons for their clients.

The teachers at this company offer 26 lessons where both the children and the parents can learn to play instruments like the guitar, piano, violin, and others. They can also specialize in certain genres like classical music, rock, pop, and many more.

In our opinion, these lessons can be a great opportunity for the family to bond. Also, learning to play an instrument can strengthen one’s memory, coordination, and memorization skills.

If you’re interested in that, you may need to prepare extra cash because these lessons are a bit costlier than others. Also, these lessons aren’t available in areas that are too far from their address.

Still, it’s wonderful that some tutors at Teachers 2 Go are well-versed in both English and Spanish, enabling them to help your child if their school has a dual-language curriculum.

Pros

  • Has a science-oriented summer boot camp
  • Provide refresher courses to prepare children before school starts

Cons

  • Their curriculum isn’t designed for kids with behavioral conditions
  • Student pick-ups sometimes take a while

If your child has a special interest in the field of sciences, Old School Tutoring & After School Care has a STEM Boot Camp that hone their skills in chemistry, physics, robotics, and others.

In this program, tutors supervise the children in performing science experiments like elephant toothpaste, baking soda volcanoes, identifying rock types, and others. There are also field trips to museums where they take notes on the exhibits

We’re also in awe of the robotics lessons in the STEM Boot Camp. During these lessons, the tutors would teach the children basic coding skills, which they use to make their robots perform commands like walking or grasping things.

For us, these lessons are an effective way to teach children difficult science concepts. These activities and experiments show the children the practical applications of the lessons they’re discussing, making them remember them better in the future.

Although, some students with certain behavioral problems like ADHD had difficulties learning on this company’s curriculum.

The tutorial here has an independent approach of letting children learn on their own, which may not be the right strategy for some kids who need direct supervision to learn.

The pickup services for children are also a bit late at certain times, with their service vehicle being more than 30 minutes later than usual.

Still, it’s great that the summer program of Old School Tutoring & After School Care also has reading and math refresher courses to prepare the kids academically before school starts.

Pros

  • Experts in helping kids grasp difficult math lessons
  • Teaches children some practical tricks to make arithmetic easier
  • Focuses on boosting children’s confidence in their academic abilities

Cons

  • Some parents experience billing issues even when the service is done
  • Doesn’t allow food and drinks during lessons

We’re impressed with how Mathnasium West Houston helps improve their pupil’s math grades by focusing on areas that the child finds difficult to understand.

Here, the tutors first ask the pupil to answer an assessment test so they could have an idea of the student’s learning progress. After that, the tutor notes topics where the child performed poorly.

It’s commendable that each child’s curriculum is modeled to provide extra teaching hours on concepts that the child doesn’t comprehend well. It enables the institution to help fill in learning gaps and boost the child’s intellect.

Another thing we like here is the math tricks they teach children. Besides the heavy focus on mental math, the instructors also show their pupils some shortcuts like addition using the hands to help them answer problems quickly.

Although, some parents complain about the billing system of this place. Even if the tutorial sessions are done, there are times when the company automatically deducts fees from their cards, which takes a long time to refund.

Also, some instructors don’t allow snacks inside the classroom.

While it’s understandable that it’s a common procedure in some schools, most of the pupils here come straight from day school. So, some kids may get hungry during lessons, which affects their performance.

Regardless, we like how the tutors of  Mathnasium West Houston would always encourage their pupils to believe in their intellect. In that way, they won’t be discouraged from participating in class and group activities.

Pros

  • Help in preparing students for standardized tests
  • Has review courses for engineering licensure exams

Cons

  • Difficult to understand video modules
  • Expensive rates for licensure exam courses

TestMasters Houston specializes in helping their students ace special examinations for school applications and licenses.

It’s wonderful that this facility offers help with necessary admission tests like the SATs, LSATs, GMATs, GREs, and other entrance exams. Here, students are enrolled in 11 classes lasting for 3 hours each and they are provided with study guides as a reference.

Each of the courses has a teacher for every part of the exam. As a reference, their SATs course has an instructor specializing in math, reading, writing, and language.

We also found it helpful that there is also a test-taking subject that helps the learners answer the tests more quickly. With the help of this course, people can have more time to review their answers to check for mistakes.

Also, you could modify the method of instruction based on your availability. We like that they have an in-person class package, a 1-on-1 private tutorial session, or a live online class perfect for any schedule.

However, note that their review services are expensive, with some courses costing a total of $1,500. Some who took their live online classes also complained that the format doesn’t enable them to ask their instructions for clarification.

Still, it’s great that TestMasters Houston also offers review courses for engineering licensure exams.

They have programs for exams on chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical, and other disciplines of engineering. We’re impressed with their curriculum designed for people to recall their college lessons, helping them review topics that may appear on the exam.
