Everyone in Houston has probably heard of Emancipation Park. But do you know its history and what makes it stand out from the rest of the many parks in the city?
Join us as we discover the story behind the park’s impact on the community and how it has changed into a newly developed space for public use today.
What is Emancipation Park?

Houston has over 366 parks and 200 green spaces, so when a park like Emancipation Park becomes iconic, then it must be for good reason.
So what makes it so special?
Emancipation Park is the oldest park in Houston and in Texas. It’s known for being the only public park open to African-Americans during racial segregation in the late 19th to early 20th century.
In 1872, members of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and the Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church bought some land measuring 10 acres for $800 to celebrate the end of slavery in the United States.
Because the owners didn’t have enough money to keep the park running in tip top shape year round, they decided to use it as the venue to celebrate Juneteenth (June 19) or the day slaves were granted emancipation (which is where the park got its name).
In 1916, the local government of Houston received the park as a gift and they made it into a municipal park 2 years later.
During the racial segregation that lasted from 1922 to 1940, public spaces were typically labeled “for whites” or “for blacks”. Emancipation Park was the only one in Houston that was solely dedicated for African-Americans’ use.
Emancipation Park became vital for African-American community activities and programs like after-school classes, youth summer programs, community huddles, and public classes. It continued to be a venue for Juneteenth celebrations and concerts.
Later on, a recreation center, swimming pool, and bathhouse were added to the park.
Unfortunately, in the 1970s, when the rich members of the community left the area, there were no funds for the upkeep of the park or the continuation of the Juneteenth celebrations.
With the lack of funds, for nearly 3 decades the park remained as it was. It was neglected by government offices, so some locals tried to take care of it in small ways and would still gather at the area to hold their own unofficial Juneteenth celebrations.
But, in 2006, Carol Pratt Blue and Bill Milligan who were natives of the third ward decided to do something about the abandoned park. The formed an organization and named it Friends of Emancipation Park with the goal of rehabilitating the park.
They drummed up noise about the historical importance of the park and fought to get the attention of local and national government agencies to step in. Their efforts paid off when a year later, the Houston City Council declared the park a historic landmark.
From 2011 to 2017, repairs and renovations worth over $33 million were carried out to improve the park, including naming the street beside it Emancipation Avenue. Juneteenth celebrations were also finally brought back.
In 2019, the park was named an official site of the UNESCO Slave Route Project to highlight its historical importance. This honor protects the park from any sort of developments that might ruin its historical significance and guarantees its maintenance.
What can I do in Emancipation Park?
Located in the Third Ward of the city, Emancipation Park offers a range of amenities and activities for visitors of all ages.
With its welcoming atmosphere, it has evolved into a dynamic space that caters to the diverse needs and interests of Houstonians, whether it’s engaging in outdoor activities and sports, appreciating art and culture, or promoting fitness and wellness.
Pro Tip:
It might be obvious, but we suggest planning a visit to the park on June 19 to join in on the celebrations, but if you can’t make it on that day, try to visit the park on Sundays to take advantage of the activities there!
Explore the Lush Landscape
Emancipation Park offers a serene escape from the bustling city streets.
You can take a leisurely stroll along the winding paths, surrounded by vibrant greenery and beautifully manicured gardens. When you visit, you’ll get to discover hidden nooks and crannies that provide peaceful spots for reflection and relaxation.
Pro Tip:
Head to the eastern side of the park to find a secluded corner under the shade of the old oak tree. It’s the perfect spot to bring a book and enjoy a tranquil reading session.
Have Fun at the Playgrounds
Families with children will find joy and excitement at the well-maintained playgrounds within Emancipation Park. You can let your little ones explore the swings, slides, and climbing structures, fostering their sense of adventure and imagination.
Pro Tip:
The playground near the entrance offers a mini rock-climbing wall that challenges older kids. Keep an eye out for the colorful mosaic tiles embedded in the pavement nearby—it’s a delightful surprise for young explorers.
Have a Picnic
If you like picnics as much as we do, you can spread out a blanket on the well-maintained grassy areas and enjoy a delicious meal with family and friends, surrounded by the park’s natural beauty.
They also have a dedicated space with roofing and tables if you want to make your picnic a more formal affair.
Pro Tip:
For a quieter picnic experience, venture towards the back of the park, near the pond. The tranquil surroundings and gentle breeze make it an ideal spot to savor your picnic experience.
Hit a Home Run on the Baseball Field
Sports enthusiasts can enjoy a friendly game of baseball on the well-maintained field at Emancipation Park. You can plan a day of baseball with friends and family or join ongoing ones to meet new people.
You can bring a bat and ball, gather your teammates, and experience the thrill of hitting a home run against the backdrop of the park’s serene ambiance.

Emancipation Park has a full basketball court inside their community center where pros and amateurs can showcase their skills on the outdoor courts. The court is equipped with all new wooden paneling and state of the art equipment.
If you’d rather watch a game than be in one, you can also go to the court and sit by the bleachers and watch a game of basketball between the people who often play there.
Pro Tip:
Early mornings are the best time to enjoy a game of basketball with fewer crowds. Take advantage of the cool breeze and start your day with some hoops.
Hit Some Balls at the Tennis Court
Tennis enthusiasts will find their slice of paradise at the well-maintained tennis courts in Emancipation Park. You can bring your racket, find a partner, and indulge in a thrilling match or simply practice your serves amidst the park’s serene surroundings.
Pro Tip:
If you’re looking for a bit of shade during a sunny day, the tennis court closest to the recreation center offers some respite. The surrounding trees provide a cooling canopy, keeping you comfortable during your game.
Go for a Quick Swim
On hot summer days, you can cool off and relax by taking a dip in Emancipation Park’s swimming pool. Whether you’re looking to swim a few laps or simply enjoy a leisurely soak, the pool provides a refreshing respite from the Texas heat.
Pro Tip:
Absolutely do not leave your floaties unattended because the pool gets really packed and it’s a nightmare to make your way through the crowd splashing around trying to find them.
Hit the Gym and Fitness Center
Fitness enthusiasts will find a well-equipped gym at Emancipation Park’s recreation center. You can stay active and work up a sweat with a range of exercise machines, free weights, and cardiovascular equipment available for use.
Classes for different types of fitness activities like yoga, aerobics, and taichi are also held at the center. Check the park’s website or the bulletin board at the lobby of the community center for the schedule.
Pro Tip:
Since the gym is newly renovated, most of the equipment is new so make sure you take advantage of them and get in a good workout.
Burn Some Calories on the Sports Field

The benches outside the theater are a great place to just sit and admire the architecture of the theater with the clear skies and greenery as the background.
Admire the Artwork and Historical Markers
As you explore the park, take the time to appreciate the captivating art installations and historical markers that adorn its grounds. Our favorite one is a chrome display, the interpretation of which is open for anyone to guess.
As you walk along the pathways, you’ll encounter historical markers that shed light on the park’s significance and commemorate key events and individuals.
These markers serve as reminders of the struggles and triumphs of those who fought for freedom and equality, leaving an indelible mark on the park’s identity.
Pro Tip:
Look for the mosaic pillars in the park that are tributes to the original founders of the park.
What are Special Events held in Emancipation Park?
Juneteenth Celebrations
Celebrations for Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day are held in Emancipation Park every year. On this day, the park comes alive with vibrant celebrations and activities that honor African American history and culture.
The park serves as a central hub where people gather to commemorate the emancipation of slaves and to reflect on the progress made in the fight for racial equality.
During Juneteenth, there will be performances, food, exhibitions, and activities for kids.
There are often live performances by local musicians and artists, including gospel choirs, jazz bands, and spoken word poets which serve as a powerful means of expression and celebration of African American culture, creativity, and resilience.
Visitors to Emancipation Park on Juneteenth can also enjoy food vendors offering traditional African American cuisine, including barbecued meats, soul food dishes, and homemade desserts.
The park becomes a place for family picnics, where people can gather and enjoy delicious food while strengthening the bonds of community and shared history.
Historical exhibits that showcase the struggles and achievements of African Americans throughout history give attendees the chance to learn about the experiences of people from the past and gain a deeper understanding of their stories.
There are also activities for children, like face painting, storytelling, and arts and crafts workshops which are designed to engage younger generations to make sure that the legacy of Juneteenth is passed down to future ones.
Jazzy Sundays
Jazz Sundays is a free jazz concert series, made possible by a grant from the Kinder Foundation, which promises to showcase the talented musicians who keep the spirit of jazz alive in Houston.
Three Houston parks will serve as platforms for artists to share their music and love for jazz. Emancipation Park will kick off the series in March, followed by celebrations at Discovery Green in April, and Water Works in Buffalo Bayou Park in May.
Every Sunday in May, visitors can watch the performances from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm for free. Live jazz performances by talented local musicians and sometimes even guest artists like Grammy award-winning pianist Robert Glasper.
The music at Jazzy Sundays encompasses a range of jazz styles, including traditional jazz, swing, bebop, and contemporary jazz. There will also be performances from related genres like gospel, blues, and zydeco.
Local artisans and vendors also set up booths, offering handmade crafts, artwork, and food and beverages. People can explore the various displays and support local businesses
Pro Tip:
Since the event will be held outdoors, make sure you bring something to sit on like mats, blankets, or lawn chairs. Don’t forget to pack umbrellas too just in case it rains!
