Exploring the Outdoors at Houston’s Alexander Deussen Park

Exploring the Outdoors at Houston’s Alexander Deussen Park

Houston is a city known for its towering skyscrapers and a pace of life that’s as fast as its highways. But what if we told you that amidst this urban jungle lies a green space paradise where you can momentarily escape into nature?

Alexander Deussen Park is not the kind of place where you idly toss a Frisbee or take a leisurely stroll (although, you could if you wanted to). Deussen Park has all the fix-in’s of a great public park, along with access to the water.

So, if you’ve ever felt the need to reconnect with nature, swap your office chair for a picnic mat, or simply want to spend a day away from the concrete confines of the city, then tie up your laces as we stroll along Alexander Deussen Park.

What’s special about the Deussen Park in Houston?

Deussen Park is a public park in Houston that hugs the south side of Lake Houston. The park gets its full name, Alexander Deussen Park from the man who donated the land it stands on.

In 1956, petroleum geologist, Alexander Deussen, donated 309 acres of land to Harris County which the government body then turned into a park. The park became a neighborhood favorite for locals to spend time in.

It was closed down for a period of time because of damages sustained from Hurricane Harvey. After repairs were made, it reopened in 2000. A 2,800 square foot wooden pier called the T-Pier was installed which can dock around 20 to 25 boats at a time.

The T-Pier

This was just a part of the first phase of improvements being implemented by Commissioner Rodney Ellis of Precinct One’s Park Development.

An overhaul in design of the park and revamping of the boardwalk is also in the works to make the park the best it can be for both local residents in the area and visitors alike.
