The 5 Best Plant Stores in Houston

The 5 Best Plant Stores in Houston Homepage

Our Criteria

Plant Selection: Any reputable plant nursery will have healthy, appropriate local and exotic plants available. Therefore, in all of the selected plant shops, we considered the variety of plants offered and how healthy their plants appeared.
Customer Service Skills: The trademark of any good business is good customer service and the ability to fully satisfy customer needs. Thus we considered the customer service skills of the staff at the selected plant shops and whether they were attentive to their customers or not.
Garden Knowledge:  We strived to choose plant stores/nurseries with employees that aren’t just trying to sell plants. Instead, we looked for staff with garden knowledge about all plants they work with and the ability to distinguish which plants best suit their customers’ needs and expectations.
Pricing: Nobody wants to spend hundreds of dollars on one plant. So, we considered the pricing of the different plants in the plant stores and nurseries on our carefully curated list.

Pros

  • Free potting
  • Plant interior design
  • Eager customer service team
  • Classes are offered

Cons

  • Prices can be expensive

The Flora Culture team strives to provide the perfect plants for their customers.

From our observations, their eager customer service team was available to assist with any questions their customers had—even providing free potting for all plants purchased in-store.

Yes, they offer potting for formerly purchased plants. Of course, it’s for an extra small fee.

As for the plant selection at The Flora Culture, the plant inventory we saw was vast. The plants were also in a healthy condition; no rotting leaves or black spots in sight.

We appreciated how the customer service team at The Flora Culture guided us through their plant inventory, answering all of our questions and telling us facts about their different plants. However, we did note that their plants were expensive.

Besides selling plants, The Flora Culture shop offers interior design work to their customers as well.

During a sample consultation with their in-store interior plant designers, it was clear to see that they take into consideration their client’s lifestyles when deciding on which plants would be best for them.

We liked how the interior designers at The Flora Culture take into consideration not only the practicality of the plants depending on the living space, but also the availability of water and light needed for the plants to survive within a closed space.

Moreover, we took note of their flexibility and that they cater their designs to any of the needs we requested.

The Flora Culture also provides bouquets and floral experiences for Friday events varying from dinner parties to weddings. Additionally, The Flora Culture offers different classes and workshops for both beginner plant lovers and plant experts.

Pros

  • Cheap and reasonable prices
  • Vast plant inventory
  • Locally grown fruit trees

Cons

  • Bugs in plants
  • No exotic plants

Plantas N Plants is known amongst its customers for having a variety of locally grown fruit trees and vegetable plants. Many we spoke to told us about the variety of garden tools available at Plantas N Plants.

After our visit to Plantas N Plants, we can testify these statements to be true.

As we looked around the nursery, the owner Fernando wasted no time in assisting us and giving us a tour of the nursery. We liked how he gave us a detailed explanation of all of the plants in his plant inventory.

The inventory seemed to go on forever because of the vast selection of plants and trees available. We would’ve gotten lost if we didn’t have the owner giving us a tour.

We noted that Plantas N Plants had five different varieties of every fruit tree and vegetable plant. For example, their avocado trees come in different sizes and types.

One thing we liked about the plants at Plantas N Plants is that their trees are graphed and not grown directly from the seeds. By the way, this is the recommended way by plant experts to grow most fruit trees.

Some of the trees we saw were already bearing fruit, and others were starting to bud. Additionally, we were impressed with the variety of chili pepper plants, herbs, and spice plants available at Plantas N Plants.

Although we did spot some of their potted plants with a couple of bugs peeking out of the dirt, this could be due to the lack of a pesticide.

Moreover, regarding their selection of exotic tropical plants and succulents, Plantas N Plants was limited to locally grown plants. Still, the prices at Plantas N Plants were cheap and reasonable for the variety of plants offered.

Pros

  •  Healthy and vibrant plants
  •  Dog-friendly nursery
  • Massive selection of indoor plants

Cons

  • No growing pots sold here
  • Limited selection of outdoor plants

The team at Tall Plants is known amongst the loyal customers we spoke with for being helpful and answering all questions and concerns. Many customers we talked to appreciated that the team at Tall Plant didn’t try to upsell them on expensive materials.

Instead, they strived to find the best solutions for their customers’ needs. At least, that’s what we’ve been told.

Tall Plants can be compared to walking into an old-school solarium. It was an open-air shopping experience.

We recommend bringing your water bottles if you’ll be shopping for a while. We were overwhelmed at first by the vast rows and rows of plants.

Fortunately for us, though, the customer service team at Tall Plant didn’t leave us wandering down the isles alone. By the way, we saw customers roaming down the isles with their dogs—so Tall Plants is a dog-friendly nursery.

True to the remarks of others, Tall Plants is the place to be if you’re a plant lover. They have a massive selection of indoor plants but are limited in their outdoor plants.

Still, all the plants we saw were healthy and vibrant. Tall Plants also has a few unique plants in its inventory, such as Moonshine Sansevieria.

While their smaller plants are reasonably priced, the larger plants Tall Plants sells are more expensive.

Regarding their pots, they do not sell any grower pots, let alone have an inventory of pots. So we recommend keeping this in mind.

Tall Plants does, however, have hanging planters available.

Pros

  • Tropical plants
  • Plant rehab available

Cons

  • Hard to find prices
  • No wintertime plants

Zone 9 Tropicals has a reputation amongst its customers for specializing in rare and uncommon tropical plants. The downside is that most of their plants may not survive the wintertime because they are tropical.

From our experience, though, with Zone 9 Tropicals, the staff members at Zone 9 Tropicals are very informative and polite and help their customers navigate their plant selection.

However, their plant inventory can be a little bit difficult to navigate because not all the plants have prices written on the sides of the pot.

While Zone 9 Tropicals does have a price list, not all of their exotic plants are listed. Hence, we were grateful the staff at Zone 9 Tropicals were never too far away while we browsed through the greenhouse.

Yes, Zone 9 Tropicals is a literal greenhouse, filled to the brim with hundreds of plants—including rare and exotic plants.

Of course, these exotic tropical plants are pricey, but we looked throughout the shop and took note of specific plants that were marked down.

We appreciated how plants with wilting leaves or spots were marked down at a significantly lower price. Thus, the team at Zone 9 Tropicals is not trying to trick their customers by selling them poor plants for rich prices.

Moreover, we also liked how at Zone 9 Tropicals, there is a designated rehab growing station for plants not looking their best enough to be on sale.

This proved to us that the team at Zone 9 Tropicals truly is dedicated to trying to give their customers the healthiest plants.

Pros

  • Easy checkout process
  • Knowledgeable staff
  • High quality soils available

Cons

  • Overpriced

Plants for all Seasons boasts that they can give their customers solutions to all their lawn and garden needs. Many we spoke with also commented on the variety of plants at Plants for all Seasons.

What we liked about Plants for all Seasons is that although they are a plant shop, they do more than just sell plants.

To start, we noted that they offer classes for beginning plant lovers and experts. Each class discusses a different topic, all focusing on gardening.

We also liked how the Plants for all Seasons team provides base planting of up to 30 gallons. Of course, this is for an extra fee, including delivery to their customer’s home (the fee is $50.00 – 125.00).

Regarding the plant selection, the plants’ prices were vast but overpriced. In the back of the nursery, though, we did note a clearance section.

Despite this, employees at Plants for all Seasons treated us kindly. They told us any information we needed to know about starting a garden and maintaining one.

Besides carrying the plants themselves, we liked how Plants for all Seasons provides various high-quality soils, stands, and soil supplements to use for your plant’s nutrients.

To top it off, though, we liked how during the checkout process at Plants for all Seasons, they load everything for you—so no heavy lifting for customers here!
