5 Best Singing Lessons in Houston to Find Your Voice

singing-lessons-in-houston
  • Instructor Credentials: I favored trained vocal coaches with solid teaching and stage experience. Good technique shouldn’t leave my voice begging for mercy.
  • Curriculum and Technique: I checked whether lessons cover breathing, pitch, and vocal health. The best studios tailor exercises to each singer’s goals.
  • Scheduling Flexibility: I looked for evening, weekend, and online options. Singing lessons shouldn’t require rearranging my entire life.
  • Performance Opportunities: I prioritized studios offering recitals and showcases. Nothing builds confidence quite like facing a real audience.

As a young girl, I spent years in ballet classes learning to point my toes and smile through the wobble. Now, I’m ready to trade pliés for vocal warm-ups!

Finding the best singing lesson in Houston feels trickier than mastering a clean pirouette. The city has plenty of coaches, but technique and teaching style matter.

Whether you’re eyeing a musical theatre audition, expanding your range, or encouraging a young singer, proper training helps. I found some Houston studios that can help voices grow without unnecessary strain.

How much does a singing lesson cost in Houston?

Singing lessons in Houston typically cost $50 to $90 per hour. Rates may range from $30 to over $150, depending on the coach’s experience and lesson length.

A 30-minute lesson costs around $30 to $45. It’s a practical choice for beginners and young children.

A 60-minute lesson generally costs $50 to $90. This is the standard option for teens and adults.

Independent private tutors charge about $30 to $100 per hour. Rates on tutoring platforms often average $35 to $45 per hour.

Elite vocal coaching costs roughly $95 to $150 or more per hour. These sessions often focus on auditions or studio recording.

Online singing classes range from $29 to $70 per hour. They can be cheaper because there are no studio facility fees.

Hours: Voice lesson package schedules are here

Houston Voice Studio caught my attention because its lessons aren’t pulled from a one-size-fits-all songbook. Coaches tailor each session to the singer’s technique, goals, and artistic style, whether they’re exploring pop, musical theater, or original music.

Its lesson packages offer far more than weekly vocal exercises and a polite round of scales.

Students receive custom tracks, sheet music, workshops, recording sessions, and opportunities to perform both in the studio and on a main stage with live accompaniment.

I especially like that invited applicants can try a free 30-minute lesson before committing. It’s a practical way to see whether the teaching style hits the right note.

The catch is that regular weekly lessons come as bundled monthly packages starting at $215. Singers wanting occasional à-la-carte sessions may need to join the priority waitlist.

Pros

  • All-access plans with sheet music and workshops
  • Included live band and studio performances
  • Serves theater actors, kids, and returning singers
  • Flexible Zoom and Rice Village studio options

Cons

  • No customized or reduced-price lesson packages

Audition and Musical Growth

Ms. Caitlin, Emma, and Shannon have all been wonderful! Our daughter has been with HVS for 5 years and has grown and flourished under their tutelage. They’ve helped her with auditions for high school and multiple musicals. We’re grateful to have found Ms. Caitlin back in 2020. Highly recommend their team.

Caitlin is a consummate professional! A great singer and a great teacher, whether you’re looking to study contemporary or classical. She’s super personable and passionate about what she does. Cool space, too! Give Houston Voice Studio a try; you’ll love it!

Tom McKinney Vocal Studios is the sort of place that makes an ordinary warm-up feel ready for a spotlight. Tom is a 1971 Metropolitan Opera National Council winner, and he and Colleen each bring decades of professional entertainment experience.

They teach beginners and seasoned performers across different genres using their Sing With the Ease of Speech method.

The studio’s past clients include Beyoncé, Demi Lovato, Solange, and Scott Hoying, which is quite a résumé before anyone sings a single note.

I like that lessons cover both vocal and performance skills rather than keeping students glued to scales. Singers who are genuinely ready may even receive introductions to professionals within the McKinneys’ industry network.

The main limitation is the firm minimum age of 10. Families seeking instruction for younger children will have to take their budding superstar elsewhere.

Pros

  • Led by a Metropolitan Opera National Council winner
  • Decades of professional entertainment experience
  • Teaches beginners and experienced performers
  • Covers multiple genres and performance skills
  • May connect ready students with industry professionals
  • Past clients include several major recording artists

Cons

  • Firm minimum student age of 10 (not suitable for younger children seeking vocal lessons)

Vocal Technique and Stage Confidence

Tom and Colleen are the best vocal coaches you can find in Texas. Because of them, I am where I am now. They helped me with my vocal techniques, breathing, stage performance, and self-confidence, and now I am performing all over Houston and about to release my first single. They are wonderful people to know; I’m so grateful to have them in my life.

Professional Vocal Coaching

4. Bojangles Music School

Address: 313 Lilac Street

Contact: (832) 968-4290

Hours: Monday, 11 AM – 6 PM | Tuesday-Thursday, 11 AM – 9 PM | Friday, 11 AM – 6 PM | Saturday, 10 AM – 5 PM | Sunday, 11 AM – 5 PM (all lessons by appointment)

Bojangles Music School feels refreshingly close to Houston’s working music scene rather than a buttoned-up conservatory.

Its roster includes active local performers such as Hudson Mueller, an award-winning singer-songwriter with more than 20 years of teaching experience.

Students can explore voice, songwriting, guitar, and other instruments under one roof. Some instructors teach several of these subjects, which is handy if your vocal goals keep wandering toward writing your own songs.

I like that Bojangles doesn’t lock everyone into the same payment setup. Students can choose pay-as-you-go, monthly subscription, or one-off lessons, while college students, teachers, seniors, and veterans may receive discounts of up to 15%.

The monthly subscription is less forgiving because individual lesson cancellations aren’t permitted.

Ending the plan requires 30 days’ notice, so check your calendar before committing to a weekly encore.

Pros

  • Includes active, award-winning local musicians
  • More than 20 years of teaching experience
  • Voice, songwriting, and instrument lessons available
  • Pay-as-you-go, subscription, and one-off options
  • Discounts of up to 15% for eligible groups

Cons

  • Monthly plans don’t allow single-lesson cancellations
  • Canceling a monthly subscription requires 30 days’ notice

Supportive Lessons for Adult Beginners

Bojangles is wonderful. Shawn is a great teacher – funny, patient, and passionate about the craft – everything this 61-year-old newbie could ask. The Heights location is all Heights coolness, and the Rockin’ Robin location is the best sort of rough around the edges.  Both are authentic Houston.  Great place, great people.

Encouraging Houston Music Education

Shawn Parks, founder of Bojangles Music School, is one of the most enthusiastic and encouraging music educators I’ve ever met. His passion for introducing others to music and musicianship is inspiring! As a reflection of the respect he has earned in the Houston music community, his instructors are some of the finest musicians in town.  I encourage anyone looking to learn an instrument or polish current or rusty skills to go talk to Shawn and see for yourself!

5. River Oaks Music School

Website

Address: 1701 South Shepherd Drive Suite E

Contact: 281-778-2378 | (713) 520-8383 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday-Friday, 2 PM – 9 PM | Saturday, 10 AM – 6 PM | Sunday, noon – 6 PM

River Oaks Music School appeals to me because its voice lessons don’t stop at singing the correct notes. Students learn music reading, healthy vocal technique, and how to perform with backing tracks or live accompaniment.

Lessons may incorporate acting and musical theater skills, giving expressive singers more room to play.

The faculty includes degree-qualified musicians with varied performance and teaching backgrounds, rather than one identical mold of instructor.

Its seven-day schedule earns a big tick from anyone juggling school, work, and Houston traffic. Weekday lessons run until 9 PM, while a 30-minute trial lets students sample the teaching style before committing.

However, that short trial may feel rushed if you want a deeper vocal assessment. The school holds two recitals per academic year, so performance-hungry singers may want more chances to command the stage.

Pros

  • Covers music reading and healthy vocal technique
  • Includes backing-track or accompanist practice
  • Develops acting and musical theater skills
  • Degree-qualified instructors from varied institutions
  • Open seven days a week with late weekday hours

Cons

  • Introductory trial lessons are limited to 30 minutes
  • Offers only two school recitals per academic year

Long-Term Voice and Piano Progress

We’ve had a wonderful experience with all teachers in River Oaks Music – we’ve been here for more than 4 years – and all teachers are well prepared, patient, and welcoming. Denise has been doing voice and piano lessons, and my daughter loves it. Hanna and Sophie are great piano teachers as well.

Enriching Voice Lessons for Kids

This is a great place for kids to start their creative journey. My son learns ukulele, and my daughter takes voice and violin lessons from Mr. Skiles and Ms. Denise, respectively, and it has been a great and enriching experience for the kiddos and us parents.
