5 Restaurants Serving the Best Soul Food Houston (We swear!)
There’s something about soul food that makes us feel really safe and cozy. The warm smell of spices in the kitchen reminds us of Sundays with the family, kids lounging in front of the television.
Nowadays, it’s a little harder to get the family together every week. Soul food still reminds us of the good times, though. That’s why we made it our mission to find the best soul food restaurants right here in H-Town – and so we could share the soul with you!

Pros
- Good range of dishes and drinks
- Great location, brightly lit and spacious
- Catering services
Cons
- Can get crowded on weekends
Mikki’s Cafe is a well-known soul food restaurant and catering business on the southwest side of the city. They also opened a second location in Pearland.
They have a good range of mouthwatering entrees to pick from, with dishes made of beef, chicken, and seafood. We highly recommend their oxtails, which were definitely our favorite!
We found the dishes we ordered flavorful, familiar, and freshly made. You can also ask about their daily specials, which are a very reasonable $12.95.
Their prices are okay, although we do wish the portions were a little bigger. This goes for both the main dish and the sides, which we found a little small.
They do have a great range of cocktails and beer available for the adults. We really enjoyed the deliciously sweet flavors of the Sweet Bae Bae, and their Melon Bombs.
The place is large, spacious, and brightly lit, so we were pretty comfortable. They’ve also got a good amount of free parking for their customers, which is always a bonus for us.
However, the place can get pretty full on the weekends, and you might end up waiting in line for a while, whether you’re dining in or just picking your food up.
They have catering services, which we think is a great idea for any parties or other events you might want to throw. They even have food truck services if you want to take it outside!

Esther’s Cajun Cafe and Soul Food is a family-owned soul food restaurant on North Shepherd Drive.
They have daily menus, so we recommend going to their website to see what is available before your visit.
They have a pretty good range of delicious dishes on each day, with meat dishes, fish dishes, and chicken dishes available. We adored their oxtails and pork chops, which were flavorful and freshly made.
Their sides are available daily, and they have a pretty good variety of them, too. The collard greens and yums were stand-outs in flavor!
The place is also quite nice, large enough, bright, and open. The atmosphere in the place is definitely relaxing and sociable.
They have a free parking lot, which is a bonus for us. However, depending on how busy the day is, it might be a little harder to get a spot.
The staff is approachable and professional, but we did have to wait in line a little bit. We recommend going before or after their peak hours, or making a reservation.

Pros
- Great range of dishes
- Great location, bright and spacious
- Free parking
Cons
- On the more expensive side of this list
- Long lines on weekends
Houston This is It has been “bringing Every Meal that Sunday Feel” since 1959. It’s a family restaurant that is currently on its fourth generation of owners, which is pretty cool.
They have a good selection with thirteen delectable main soul food dishes and eleven sides. They also have a sweet desserts menu to finish off your meal!
Our favorite was their award-winning Mac n Cheese and their Candied Yams. The flavors were divine, and pretty filling on their own!
We also recommend trying some of their six flavors of daiquiri to complement your meal!
The prices are definitely on the more expensive side, which isn’t for everybody. If you’re looking to save a little on your next soul food meal, there are other options on this list.
The place is comfortable and spacious, with a decent amount of free parking for their customers. We didn’t have any issue looking for a spot, which is always a bonus.
The lines can get pretty long on the weekends, but the service is professional and friendly. Although the line was long when we arrived, we didn’t have to wait too long for our food.
We also really enjoyed getting to listen to the owners tell us about the restaurant and the family’s rich history. They believe in fostering a community, which we can definitely get behind.

Pros
- Good range of dishes
- Two locations in Houston
Cons
- Location is a bit small
- Parking can be difficult
The Greasy Spoon has two locations in Houston, and one in Pearland, Texas. They’re an award-winning soul food bistro we were excited to try out.
They have a good selection of great main dishes, with staples like Smothered Porkchop and their World Famous Oxtails. We knew we had to order them, and they didn’t disappoint.
They also have desserts and a menu of dishes that are cooked to order, which you can see on their website. We absolutely adored their homemade peach cobbler.
They have food ready to serve, but if you want something else you’ll have to wait a little bit. The wait wasn’t too long, but if you’re in a hurry you might not want to order those.
The flagship location is a little small, but the good thing is that there’s another location in Midtown now. The parking situation is a gas station parking lot, which isn’t the best.
The service is professional, although some people we talked to found the staff could be a little friendlier. We didn’t have any issues during our visit, and the food was pretty great.

Cons

Soul Food by Catherine is a small restaurant on West Fuqua St. in Houston. According to their website, their restaurant is “where LA meets Texas!”
They have a pretty big range of dish selections on their menu, which we loved. They have baked dishes, fried dishes, homemade sides, desserts, and specials.
We really enjoyed their Ribs Basket and Mac n Cheese! The food was perfectly spiced, we had to lick the sauce.
We also recommend Catherine’s Soul-in-a-Bowl, which is between $7-$8.
We also wanted to try some of their desserts, and they were delicious! We really enjoyed their sweet potato tarts and peach cobbler.
They also make homemade cakes, which we decided to order. They were just the perfect amount of sweet, moist, and delicious.
The place is a little small, so at peak hours it may be a little full. However, the atmosphere is warm and cozy, so we didn’t feel uncomfortable.
The staff were friendly and welcoming, instantly making us feel comfortable. However, we should note that we did have to wait a bit for our meals to arrive.
Other reviewers also say that service can be a little bit slow at times, so do keep that in mind.
