The 5 Best Ankle Doctors in Houston Who Treat Every Patient with Skill and Care

top-ankle-doctors-houston
  • Specialist Experience - We looked for doctors who specialize in a wide range of ankle and foot problems. That way, whatever you are dealing with—sprain, tendon injury, or other conditions—you can feel confident about their care.
  • Credentials - Our eyes were set on truly qualified doctors. This means being certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS), a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), and more.
  • Treatment Options - Whether it's minimally invasive ankle surgery or physical therapy, the clinics we chose offer a full range of options. Treatment plans are also personalized, so you can get the care that works best for your body.
  • Patient Care Approach - We asked around to see which doctors are both skilled and compassionate. Patient reviews and referrals, highlighting expert care and clear communication, guided our choices.
  • Flexible Availability - The doctors we considered make appointments manageable. Options for same-day visits, easy rescheduling, and telemedicine sessions made a strong impression.

I still remember spraining my ankle in middle school. It was on my way down the stairs, a heavy backpack on my shoulders and tons of papers in my arms, when I missed the last step.

By the time I got home, my dad immediately noticed how much it had swollen. Then came weeks of rubbing ointments and walking around with a bandaged foot until I fully healed.

Looking back, I wonder what might have happened if I’d gone to the doctor—specifically, the best ankle doctors in Houston. Perhaps I would have gotten better faster, but just in case, here are the ones worth calling for their skill and care.

Fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons and foot and ankle specialists make up the Houston Methodist team. They handle everything from bunions and high arch deformities to injuries such as sprains, fractures, and broken bones.

Some patients found relief with non-surgical solutions, such as anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy. Others healed with minimally invasive and reconstructive surgeries that included rehabilitation services to support full recovery.

This comprehensive care ranked among the best in Texas by U.S. News & World Report. We were even more impressed to learn that organizations such as the Houston Astros and the Houston Ballet trust them as an official medical provider.

The same collaborative, research-based approach used for these elite athletes and performers is applied to all patients. Treatment plans are customized, and accessible digital patient portals enable easier follow-up and communication.

Still, a small downside for newcomers is that same-day visits and telemedicine check-ins tend to favor long-term clients.

Pros

  • Fellowship-trained & specialist team
  • Comprehensive care options
  • Recognized among Texas’s best
  • Trusted by elite organizations
  • Personalized, research-based approach
  • Digital patient portals for easy follow-up

Cons

  • Limited same-day visit access
  • Telemedicine is less available for newcomers

More to the M.D. in his name, Taggart T. Gauvain carries certification from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) and membership in the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS). On top of that, he has been in practice since 2010.

With such credentials, it’s no surprise that Dr. Gauvain specializes in foot and ankle surgery. He performs total ankle replacements, minimally invasive procedures such as ankle arthroscopy, and corrective bunion and hammertoe surgeries.

There are also those who come in for fracture care, sports-related injuries, and sprains.

Patients praise the smooth experience and real results. One even decided to stay on as a regular after expressing trust in Dr. Gauvain and his team’s ability to help her walk on her right foot again.

Scheduling is sometimes tricky, though, as we found slots fully booked a month ahead, and last-minute changes aren’t usually accommodated. Luckily, urgent appointments are easy to arrange—and they accept most health insurance plans.

Pros

  • ABOS-certified, AOFAS-member lead doctor
  • In practice since 2010
  • Wide-ranging specializations
  • Smooth patient experiences
  • Urgent appointments easy
  • Health insurance accepted

Cons

  • Fully booked a month ahead
  • Last-minute changes difficult

Every single person who helped with my surgery made it pleasant for me

“There’s no words great enough to express how Awesome Dr. Gauvain is. My first Surgery in my lifetime, and the man and his team were outstanding. Every single person who helped with my Surgery, made it pleasant for me. I’m looking forward to keeping Dr. Gauvain and his staff in my pocket, throughout this new journey. He’s going to put me back on both feet and walking on my right foot again, and doing the things I love to do. I’m looking forward to climbing the Mountains again 😂.”

What patients often mention about Dr. David M. Bloome of Fondren Orthopedic Group is his bedside manner. People feel comforted by how clearly (and kindly) he explains every step, with a well-organized team beside him.

Broken ankles, sports injuries, and ankle replacement surgery are just some of the cases they have worked on. The results mostly show clients getting back to daily activities or finally receiving care that other orthopaedic specialists couldn’t provide.

Their methods involve using a splint or cast, along with RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation). If you are recommended for surgery, expect two to three weeks of post-op physical therapy.

As efficient as the process has been for most—physical exam, X-ray, diagnosis, and treatment plan—a lack of expertise in hammertoes did lead to cancelled surgeries. Also, costs were confusing due to incomplete breakdowns.

Even so, we were drawn to their quick, timely scheduling and Dr. Bloome’s ABOS certification and memberships in the AOFAS and AAOS.

Pros

  • Comforting bedside manner
  • Well-organized team
  • Successful patient outcomes
  • Non-surgical/surgical options available
  • Quick, timely scheduling
  • ABOS, AOFAS, & AAOS credentials

Cons

  • Lack of expertise in hammertoes
  • Cancelled surgeries & incomplete cost breakdowns

Given back to me the ability to continue playing drums

“Thank you, Dr. Bloom for the ankle replacement surgery. You have given back to me the ability to continue playing drums, which means a lot to me throughout my whole life. Thank you for that. You have a wonderful bedside manner. I can understand when you were talking to me. What we were gonna do, how we were gonna do it, I had this calm feeling come over me that everything was gonna be just fine. Thank you, Dr., you’re the best. I will let all my friends know about Dr. David Bloome, his staff, and the Fondren Orthopedics hospital.”

The Foot & Ankle Center is run by board-certified podiatrists—Dr. Mactavish Jr. and Dr. Armstrong are among the patient favorites. Since 1974, they have cared for individuals and even entire families, thanks in part to their pediatric expertise.

Over the years, the conditions they treat have grown beyond common issues like ankle arthritis and Achilles tendon injuries to include ingrown toenails and plantar warts. In each case, the team’s knowledge really shone through.

Many patients have continued to return for years, but some have decided to switch clinics. This was because of doctors who shifted attention away from original concerns or continued treatments—such as steroid injections—despite clear ineffectiveness.

What’s reassuring is their ACFAS (American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons) membership, which reflects the skill behind the surgeries, Radial Shockwave Therapy, and more they offer.

Online patient portals also simplify scheduling and reduce wait times in the waiting room. However, website glitches have occasionally blocked submissions.

Pros

  • Team of board-certified podiatrists
  • Over 30 years in the industry
  • Family-friendly due to pediatric expertise
  • Skilled, knowledgeable approach
  • Comprehensive foot & ankle care
  • Easy scheduling online

Cons

  • Inconsistent focus & treatment mismatch
  • Occasional patient portal issues

His knowledge of ankles and feet is unequaled

“Dr. Armstrong is brilliant. His knowledge on ankles and feet is unequaled. He is kind with an unbelievable bedside manner. I would never choose another doctor. His office assistant, Christine gets a 5 star rating also. In fact all of his staff is excellent and efficient. The thing I personally love the most is that he doesn’t want you to be in pain. I had 2 other doctors before him that did nothing! He repaired me and I will always be truly greatful to him. Thanks, Neva Conner.”

Dr. Robert G. Parker is an ankle doctor with numerous credentials. The acronyms next to his name—DPM, FACFAS, FASPS, and FAMIFAS—prove he’s a qualified podiatrist and a fellow in several American foot and ankle surgical organizations.

But to many of his patients, he’s known as “Painless Parker.” That’s because surgeries, laser therapies, and general foot care are carried out with no discomfort—both during procedures and throughout recovery.

This applies to adults with heel pain or who need bunion surgery, athletes with ankle sprains, and children with flat feet. Even seniors benefit from Dr. Parker’s nerve condition expertise, particularly for Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome.

Let’s not forget diabetic foot care and regenerative medicine, which help manage chronic conditions and promote faster healing.

While appointments are often described as compassionate and thorough, other patients report late starts and unresponsive staff. Add to that how urgent bookings and reschedules are promised, only to be taken back later.

Pros

  • Numerous professional credentials
  • Painless & wide-ranging treatments
  • Expertise in nerve conditions
  • Treats a variety of patients
  • Compassionate, thorough appointments

Cons

  • Late appointments & unresponsive staff
  • Occasional unreliable scheduling
