Tool and Equipment: We prioritized clinics that use modern surgical tools to promote minimally invasive procedures, thereby improving precision and overall surgical outcomes.

Recovery Time: Strong post-op care was highly considered to ensure efficient recovery time, so patients can return to their regular activities in no time.

Treatment Options: We also considered centers that offer comprehensive treatment options, including open surgery, minimally invasive repair, and robotic-assisted procedures.

Patient Experience: We evaluated patient experiences through interviews and surveys to identify which clinics make patients feel informed, respected, and secure throughout the surgical process.

A hernia is something you shouldn’t overlook, and just hope it will go away naturally, because it usually doesn’t. I remember when my dad was suffering from it, he tried to brush it off and insisted that it was nothing serious.

At first, it looked like a small bulge that went away whenever he lay down, which made it easy to ignore—and that was our first mistake. As time passed, the discomfort and pain became so frequent that we finally took action.

Lo and behold, that tiny bump we dismissed actually needed surgical intervention. The idea scared us at first, but with the help of a great hernia surgery clinic in Houston, my dad felt at ease during the procedure and was able to recover on time.

How much does hernia surgery cost in Houston?

The cost of hernia surgery in Houston varies widely depending on the type of hernia and the surgical method. For example, inguinal hernia surgery can cost $4,000 to $12,000, while incisional hernia surgery ranges from $5,000 to $15,000.

Here at TLC, hernia care is delivered as a part of the laparoscopic and general surgery menu. This includes laparoscopic repair, a minimally invasive approach that uses only small incisions to repair the problem area.

During the procedure, the surgeon uses a high-definition camera and specialized instruments to precisely repair the defects. This results in reduced recovery time and less discomfort than with open surgery.

Their focus on minimizing trauma to the surrounding tissues means they are best-suited for active adults or professionals who can’t afford extensive recovery periods. Not to mention, they are also an excellent choice for those who don’t want noticeable scarring.

While they are primarily known for their weight-loss and bariatric operations, we were impressed to learn that many people come to them for hernia surgery as well.

Just note that there may be minor delays at the initial meeting, such as rescheduled appointments and longer wait times for booking confirmations.

Pros

  • Minimally invasive approach
  • Faster recovery time
  • Specialized tools and equipment

Cons

  • Difficulty with scheduling

One of the best clinics

“I received a hernia removal and gastric bypass on 8/27/24, and I was very nervous about it. The staff made me feel very comfortable and always communicated with me, including Dr. Sherman Yu. He addressed my concerns and explained the procedure very accurately. He was also very comforting every time I needed it (and believe me, I needed it). He is definitely one of the BEST surgeons in the world! I truly recommend this place!”

He fixed my hiatal hernia that I did not know I had

“I really loved Dr. Yu and his team, they were very helpful and explained everything they were doing and about how long it would all take. I will definitely refer him to anyone needing surgery done. Most of all, he fixed my heartburn problem when he did my gastric sleeve surgery. He fixed my hiatal hernia, I did not know I had.”

As a clinic focused on hernia care and surgery, Texas Hernia & Surgical Specialists helps patients manage discomfort and mobility issues associated with this condition.

The practice is led by Dr. Rick Q. Ngo, MD, FACS, a surgeon who has performed over 1,500 successful hernia procedures. Apparently, he’s a consistent recipient of the “Super Doctor” award, and his skills are well-recognized in the city.

Here, they offer both open and minimally invasive (laparoscopic) hernia repair, giving patients the flexibility to choose what works best for their body. Whenever possible, they will always recommend laparoscopic hernia surgery for faster healing and less visible scarring.

With this, we can say that this place is very suitable for patients who need help from someone with a specialized focus on the matter, most especially for multiple or recurring hernia issues.

The only hiccup we found is that their customer service line can be difficult to reach. Calls often go to voicemail, and it takes hours to get a return call.

Pros

  • Specialized hernia expertise
  • Highly recognized lead surgeon
  • Treatment flexibility
  • Ideal for complex hernia cases

Cons

  • Difficulties with communication

I can’t say enough good things

“I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Ngo, Mark, or the practice. I had a hernia repair and gallbladder removal scheduled after having my 3rd child. Everything went so smoothly, from my first appointment to pre op, to surgery, to post op. I have healed wonderfully and greatly appreciate Dr. Ngo and his staff. I will recommend Dr. Ngo to everyone I possibly can.”

Dr Ngo is amazing

Dr Ngo is amazing.  He performed a triple hernia surgery on me, and his knowledge and treatment with me have made the whole process as stress-free as possible.  He has personally been checking up on me to see how I am recovering, and I have already referred him to a friend. I highly recommend him.

As the name suggests, Houston Robotic Hernia Surgery offers minimally invasive, robotic-assisted procedures for abdominal and ventral hernias.

They use one of the most advanced robotic systems. This includes the Da Vinci platform, known for its high accuracy in suturing and mesh replacement.

Most procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, so patients can go home the same day.

One of the most appealing benefits they offer is access to FDA- and IRB-approved clinical studies. If the patient qualifies for the trial, the center covers the full cost of treatment.

We also appreciate that they consider non-narcotic pain management due to the side effects and risks. They make sure to use non-addictive medications for a cleaner and smoother recovery period.

It’s just disappointing that the team sometimes overlooks pre-existing conditions during the evaluation. In some instances, they only ask patients about medical history on the day of surgery, which unfortunately leads to a cancellation that could have been avoided earlier.

Pros

  • Advanced robotic-assisted procedure
  • Outpatient convenience
  • Cost-saving clinical trials
  • Safe pain management
  • Safe pain management

Cons

  • Evaluation oversights

I felt pretty good by day 4

“Had an umbilical hernia. Consulted 3 surgeons, but I chose Dr. Garza for a number of reasons. First off, his staff was so nice when I called, especially Ivy, who offered suggestions and encouraged me to choose any surgeon I felt comfortable with to have it taken care of. I was also very happy that Dr. Garza did an ultrasound of both the hernia and other possible weak spots, and explained his method very well. The lack of permanent sutures or meshes inside me is also very appealing. It has been 12 days since my surgery, and while the first few days were pretty tough, I felt pretty good by day 4, and I was able to go for a long run today. If I don’t update this review, then the repair will be held up!”

He is truly a master surgeon

“Dr. Jim Garza is an outstanding surgeon who provides dedicated care to patients and their families. I had an enlarging inguinal hernia and 2 umbilical hernias that were repaired using minimally invasive robotic technology. I only missed 2 days of work and never even needed a pain pill. He is truly a master surgeon!”

Dr. Buckminster Farrow has over 25 years of experience in surgical care and is locally known for hernia repair and other abdominal and general surgery. He can see patients at his multiple offices in the region, with his Houston site being the most popular one.

For hernia repair, Dr. Farrow offers both open and laparoscopic procedures for various types of hernias. These include inguinal, umbilical, and ventral hernias.

He’s actually skilled in complex abdominal reconstruction. This involves restoring the problem area, especially when a hernia is large or the previous surgery failed.

He even uses advanced tools, such as SURGIMESH. It’s a material that mimics the body’s own tissues for faster healing and more comfortable repair.

What really sealed the deal for us was his low recurrence rate of just 2.15%, which we found to be well below the national average. He ensures that once your hernia is fixed, it stays fixed.

The patients we spoke with said the process was smooth and hassle-free. Every option was thoroughly discussed, and Dr. Farrow always ensured they felt at ease before the procedure.

However, as a busy and popular practice, initial consultations can occasionally feel a bit quick to make room for multiple appointments in a day.

Pros

  • Over 25 years of experience
  • Complex reconstruction specialist
  • Low recurrence rate
  • Offers both open and laparoscopic procedures
  • Advanced medical materials

Cons

  • Brief consultations

At Houston Surgical Group, patients suffering from hernia can be treated with open, minimally invasive, and robotic-assisted surgery options. Apart from hernia repair, its wide surgical scope also includes general surgery needs.

What sets them apart is their expertise in single-incision laparoscopy. Compared to other centers that use three to four entry points, Houston Surgical Group uses only one. It’s a tiny entry point to reduce visible scarring.

We like that they always stay on track with the most advanced techniques to further minimize pain and downtime.

From what we have gathered, patients often praise the team’s bedside manner. They say the doctors are attentive and always prioritize understanding every aspect of the journey.

While the doctors and surgeons are consistently a pleasure to work with, interactions with the center’s administrative staff were occasionally less smooth. A few patients noted tense or abrupt exchanges at the front desk.

Pros

  • Comprehensive hernia treatment options
  • Utilizes advanced surgical techniques
  • Diverse surgical scope
  • Excellent bedside manner

Cons

  • Occasional unprofessional front desk experience

Great experience

“Great experience, Dr.Amr did my umbilical repair surgery.  He explained everything to me from start to finish and he did an excellent job. I would recommend anyone who needs a hernia repaired to go to him. Dr.Amr and his assistants are great at what they do.”

Skilled and professional during my surgery

“Dr. Lieva was very informative, skilled, and professional during my recent surgery (double hernia / separated abdominal muscle). His staff, particularly Victoria, was extremely helpful in terms of assisting with the paperwork requirements my employer required.”
